Shakur Stevenson ordered by WBC to face mandatory challenger William Zepeda

Despite being a free agent, SHAKUR STEVENSON’s upcoming fight is beginning to take shape.

WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman revealed on social media platform X tonight that the sanctioning body has instructed lightweight world champion Shakur Stevenson (22-0, 10 KOs) to defend his title against William Zepeda (31-0, 27 KOs) in a mandatory bout.

Zepeda’s recent performances have been outstanding, making him the top contender in all four organizations. His relentless and action-packed style has earned him the admiration of fans throughout the sport. In the previous year, he effortlessly defeated Jaime Arboleda, Mercito Gesta, and Maxi Hughes from Britain. Just a few weeks ago, Zepeda’s aggressive approach overwhelmed Giovanni Cabrera, resulting in a third-round knockout victory.

William Zepeda is unbeaten in 31 starts

In Ontario, during the same evening when Zepeda dominated Cabrera, a contrasting battle took place in Newark. Stevenson successfully went the distance for the sixth time, defeating Artem Harutyunyan with ease. This marked his final collaboration with Top Rank, as he is currently seeking a new promoter.

Oscar De La Hoya from Golden Boy Promotions, who promotes Zepeda, has already had a meeting with Stevenson. Additionally, Eddie Hearn from Matchroom was scheduled to have a discussion with the talented fighter today (July 15).

Should Stevenson choose to withdraw from the Zepeda fight, he risks losing his title and potentially missing out on more financially rewarding bouts against champions Gervonta Davis and Vasiliy Lomachenko. Stevenson is now faced with the decision of where his promotional future lies and whether he is willing to face the determined Zepeda.

While attending Matchroom’s card in Philadelphia on Saturday night, Stevenson was approached by DAZN’s Chris Mannix regarding a potential fight against Zepeda.

“Hell of a fighter,” Stevenson said.

In my professional career, I have yet to encounter a fighter quite like him in the ring. His relentless flurry of punches is truly remarkable. While he has his own unique style, facing someone like him would undoubtedly push me to reach my full potential and bring out the best in me.
