When and why you started boxing:

My decision to begin boxing was inspired by seeing Ronda Rousey on television. Initially, I had a strong desire to pursue MMA because I believed she was the epitome of coolness. I distinctly recall her stating, “Every muscle in my body serves a purpose,” which left me in awe. However, I was advised that starting with boxing would be more suitable for someone without prior martial arts experience. Consequently, I approached my former coach in Wigan and embarked on my boxing journey, instantly falling in love with the sport.

Favourite all-time fighter:

I have a fondness for Roberto Duran and secretly admire Lomachenko, but please keep it a secret from Anthony (Crolla). I have a weakness for left-handed boxers, which is why I am currently a huge fan of Jai Opetaia.

Best fight you’ve seen:

Ted Cheeseman and Troy Williamson had an incredible fight in Liverpool. It was absolutely mind-blowing and filled with madness. On television, I witnessed the epic clash between Graham Earl and Michael Katsidis. Their fight showcased their unwavering determination and resilience. Whenever I do my sprints, I make sure to watch that match because it reminds me that no matter how hard you fall, you should never give up.

Personal career highlight:

When I triumphed over Katharina Thanderz at the Wembley Arena last September, clinching the European title, it was an unforgettable moment. While winning the Commonwealth title was a special milestone for both myself and Ant, the prestige associated with the European championship surpassed it, in my opinion.

Toughest opponent:

In 2022, Mahjouba Oubtil competed in Spain, but the fight took place away from her home and my weight was not suitable. The weight category was super-lightweight, which was challenging for me as I struggled to meet the required weight. However, my opponent, who had previously participated in the Olympics, came at me with full force. Despite facing numerous difficulties during the fight, I believe I handled them exceptionally well.

Best and worst attributes as a boxer:

I have a tendency to complain, which is probably my worst attribute. Although I am able to complete tasks successfully, I am overly critical of myself. Even after sparring, when asked about my performance, I can’t find anything positive to say; it’s rather disheartening. However, on a positive note, this critical nature also serves as my best attribute because it keeps me constantly striving for improvement. Additionally, I excel in the skill of listening attentively. If given instructions during a fight, I will simply follow them without hesitation.

Training tip:

Make a personal investment. Recognize that you cannot be a master of all trades, hence it is crucial to surround yourself with individuals who excel in various domains.

Favourite meal/restaurant:

Because I have an intense craving for sweet treats, anything related to that tempts me.

Best friends in boxing:

Every member in the gym forms a tightly-knit group. Whenever any problems arise, we rely on one another for support and guidance. I wholeheartedly trust each and every one of them, and I am confident that we always have each other’s best interests in mind. Honesty is a fundamental aspect of our relationships, allowing us to express our true emotions openly.

Which other athlete would you like to be:

Luke Littler, a young lad who enjoys life to the fullest, always keeps things light-hearted. Upon winning, he casually mentions, “I think I’ll treat myself to a takeaway.” Meanwhile, after my sparring sessions, I’m left with the task of sticking to a strict diet. Luke’s infectious enthusiasm has even managed to spark my interest in darts. His presence is putting Warrington on the map, and Anthony claims that Luke is his preferred athlete hailing from our town.

Last film/TV show you saw:

Squid Game, and I like the reality shows, like Real Housewives of…

Who would play you in a film of your life?

Jennifer Lawrence is someone who shares my sense of humor and is incredibly funny. I believe she would portray me perfectly on screen due to her natural charm and comedic abilities.

Have you ever been starstruck:

Upon our initial encounter, tears welled up in my eyes at the sight of Paul Scunthorpe, the rugby player who had captured my heart during my younger years. Reflecting back, I recall a time when I trailed behind Andy Farrell while browsing through Marks and Spencer. As for Katie Taylor, I found myself at a loss for words in her presence, leaving her probably bewildered by my intense gaze, deeming me peculiar.

Last time you cried:

I came across a TikTok video where a girl shared her heartbreaking story of losing her boyfriend, pouring out her emotions. Being a sensitive person, tears well up in my eyes every day as I fret over my dear dog Honey.

Best advice received:

Never go on commentary without proper preparation. I made that mistake and it turned out to be the most dreadful moment of my life.

Worst rumour about yourself:

I am the one who does hair extensions for Anthony Crolla.

Something not many people know about you:

I possess a birthmark adorning my forehead, yet it is consistently mistaken for a bruise by others. On one occasion, an uninformed individual proceeded to apply ice and an iron to it, resulting in a regrettable incident. Needless to say, we refrained from seeking his assistance thereafter.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years:

Most likely, I will continue my boxing career, aiming to become the heavyweight champion of the world. However, my true passion lies in assisting dogs in shelters. It is a cause that resonates deeply with me, and I feel a strong sense of purpose in dedicating myself to their well-being.
