Following a successful first practice session at the Hungaroring where Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc secured first and third place, Ferrari encountered a tougher second practice session.
Charles Leclerc brings out the red flags in Hungarian second practice
During the practice hour on Friday evening, Leclerc’s Ferrari veered out of control as it crossed the exit kerbs at Turn 4. Spinning rapidly, Leclerc collided forcefully with the barrier, causing significant damage to the rear of the car as it performed a series of graceful spins.
Leclerc was fortunate to escape unharmed, but his return to the pits in the Medical Car meant that he couldn’t participate in any of his qualifying simulation laps. The red flags remained in place for approximately 10 minutes while track officials worked to fix the damage to the Armco barrier.
McLaren’s Lando Norris ultimately took the lead in the session, surpassing the best time from first practice with an impressive 1:17.788 on the soft tyres, securing his position as the winner of the Miami Grand Prix.
Verstappen secured the second spot in the first practice session, and he maintained the same position in the evening practice, finishing 0.243 seconds behind Norris. His fastest lap was achieved using the medium tyre.
In the remaining Ferrari, Sainz secured the third position, while Sergio Perez provided a glimmer of hope by achieving the fourth fastest time in the Red Bull, even without utilizing the upgrade package brought by the Milton Keynes-based team for Budapest.
In the race, George Russell secured the fifth position for Mercedes, while Lewis Hamilton finished in seventh place. Interestingly, Haas driver Kevin Magnussen managed to divide the two Mercedes cars. This race marks the start of Magnussen’s mission to secure a race seat elsewhere for the 2025 season.
The drivers from second to sixth position opted for the medium compound to achieve their fastest times. Hamilton, in seventh place, was the first driver after Norris to set his best time on the soft compound.
Daniel Ricciardo secured eighth place for VCARB, finishing ahead of Alex Albon from Williams and Fernando Alonso from Aston Martin.
