Adrian Newey was not sure how to process the reaction to his shock Red Bull exit, the legendary Formula 1 designer saying he has always been “very happy” to go “under the radar”.
It was confirmed in the lead up to the Miami Grand Prix that Newey’s involvement with the Red Bull Formula 1 team has come to an end, as he prepares to say goodbye to the company entirely after the first quarter of 2025.
‘Shock and surprise’ for Adrian Newey over F1 recognition
Since the news was announced, there has been an outpouring of recognition and respect for the 65-year-old, who has solidified his legacy as one of the best in the field with 25 titles won in cars designed under Newey’s watch.
The presence of Newey in Red Bull’s F1 team has ignited a debate about their ability to continue dominating the sport. Meanwhile, several teams including Ferrari, Aston Martin, McLaren, and Williams are rumored to be interested in luring Newey back. All of this attention has surprised Newey.
When Sky F1 asked for his reaction to the acknowledgment of his remarkable accomplishments in the sport, Newey expressed his surprise.
“I’ve been fortunate enough to pursue my childhood passion and work in the job I’ve always dreamed of.”
What truly inspires and motivates me is collaborating with the drivers, team engineers, and all the other mechanics at the factory.
“I suppose the flip side of it is something that I never really consider, but it seems to come along with the territory. Consequently, it has taken me by surprise and caught me off guard.”

When questioned about his remark on “other stuff” and whether it was a distracting factor, Newey clarified that statistics hold little importance to him. He found it unexpected that they were widely discussed, as he prefers to remain inconspicuous and continue flying “under the radar.”
“Actually, it’s not a bothersome distraction,” clarified Newey. “It’s just… I’m not sure how to describe it.”
“It’s likely more of a surprise than anything else because I rarely consider it. Statistics and similar factors don’t motivate me. I simply focus on what I do and usually find myself unnoticed, which I am content with.”
It appears highly probable that Red Bull will achieve two more championship victories in the 2024 F1 season. Max Verstappen is currently leading the Drivers’ Championship, while Red Bull is leading the Constructors’.
