Alex Albon has revealed that his belief in the Williams “journey” and the team’s potential made up his mind to stay after signing a new multi-year contract.

Albon has impressed in a major way since returning to the Formula 1 grid with Williams in 2022, so much so that he was seen as a potential key player in the F1 2025 driver market. However, he is an option now taken off the table.

Alex Albon hopes to inspire belief in Williams ‘journey’

Williams has officially announced that Albon has secured a fresh contract with the team, which will span multiple years and ensure his presence during the forthcoming 2026 regulatory era.

After the announcement, Albon and Vowles convened to discuss the deal, wherein the Williams team principal disclosed that Albon had garnered significant interest from other teams.

When Vowles asked Albon why he rejected other opportunities to remain with Williams, Albon responded, “I have faith in the journey. That’s ultimately what it all boils down to.”

“I observed the work being conducted behind the scenes and noticed your remarkable transparency about our current progress.”

“I believe that we have consistently maintained an open and honest approach, acknowledging the reality of our current situation without pretending it is better than it actually is. However, we have always strived to take proactive steps towards improvement.”

“The people in the factory were eager for change, which created a sense of continuous progress over the past year and a half or two years. We have all been united in our shared vision of moving forward.”

“It was one of those situations where, upon examining the season’s initial outcomes, it seemed unjust where we stood. I believe that numerous positive developments have occurred, making it feel even more unfair.”

“It may be deemed unjust, but selecting based on results is not an ideal choice in the competitive world of racing. Nevertheless, I believe that the core of our team has made tremendous progress and we continue to evolve consistently.”

“And I feel like there’s clearly so much room now for us to grow, where I didn’t feel necessarily that was the case when I first joined.”

Albon was greeted with a resounding applause from the Williams team at their Grove headquarters as his new contract was officially announced. Vowles humorously commented, “That was a more enthusiastic response than when I joined, to be honest.” He then asked Albon if he interpreted this as a sign of trust and support from his fellow team members.

He responded, “Yes, I can clearly see that.”

“I understand that it hasn’t been too long since we started working on this project, but our main focus has been to use it as a catalyst to inspire and motivate everyone involved.”

“I have faith in this team, and I hope that alone is enough for everyone at the factory to realize that we are capable of achieving our goals. I also hope that I can provide reassurance to everyone, letting them know that I believe in this journey, and they should too.”

Despite Albon’s close finishes in P11 in Saudi Arabia and Australia, Williams is yet to secure their first point of F1 2024.
