There have been strong connections between Carlos Sainz and the potential entry of Audi into Formula 1.
With the Audi project very much in mind, Sauber team representative Alessandro Alunni Bravi confirmed that they are targeting the “best available” driver pairing, with one half already set.
Sauber has recently made the announcement that Nico Hulkenberg will be joining their team for the F1 2025 campaign, leaving Haas behind. However, Sauber is yet to finalize the decision regarding his teammate for the upcoming season.

While Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu battle to remain with the team, with Esteban Ocon – set to depart Alpine after F1 2024 – also emerging as a contender, long-standing speculation has linked Carlos Sainz to the seat, as he plots his next move knowing Lewis Hamilton will replace him at Ferrari.
Alunni Bravi, while addressing the media at the Monaco Grand Prix, including PlanetF1.com, confirmed the team’s intention to acquire the “most exceptional drivers possible” who can establish a strong groundwork for the Audi era starting in 2026.
Alunni Bravi stated that their goal is to acquire the finest pair of drivers accessible in the market.
“It’s not solely reliant on our team; it also depends on various factors such as availability. The market is highly dynamic, with new names and combinations being reported in the press regularly.”
I believe our goal is to secure the most skilled drivers for a long-term venture such as the Audi F1 team project.
There is no need to hurry in finalizing the driver line-up, especially when keeping the target in mind.
When asked about the deadline for making a decision, Alunni Bravi responded, “There isn’t a specific deadline. We have a target to find the absolute best option, and that’s what we aim to achieve.”

Regarding Sainz, he shares a similar position with Sauber as he is refraining from setting any specific timelines to decide his future beyond F1 2025.
Sainz expressed to various media outlets, including PlanetF1.com, that he believes the driver market in Formula 1 operates as a circular system where everyone’s fate is interconnected.
I am still undecided about my plans for racing next year, and I have not determined any specific deadlines yet.
At this point in my career, I recognize the significance of making a crucial decision. With multiple options available, I am determined to choose the right one and approach it with careful consideration. As I approach my 30th birthday this year, I am eager to ensure that my next project is successful and I am excited to see its outcome.
I will allocate as much time to myself as I require.
In F1 2024, Sauber remains the sole team yet to secure their inaugural point.
