Mattia Binotto in the Formula 1 paddock.
Following the bombshell announcement of sweeping changes in the Audi Formula 1 project, the hiring of Mattia Binotto has been explained as a move to create “independence” for the team.
As preparations continue for Audi’s arrival on the Formula 1 grid in 2026 – at which point the Sauber team will morph into Audi’s F1 outfit – the German brand has announced the signing of former Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto, who will take over from Andreas Seidl at the head of their F1 operations.
Mattia Binotto part of Audi F1 ‘independence’ blueprint
Audi has provided an explanation for the unexpected personnel changes, following chairman Oliver Hoffmann’s departure. They assert that the appointment of Binotto as chief operating and chief technical officer guarantees the autonomy and independence of the Audi F1 project. This decision also grants Binotto with responsibility and accountability.
According to Audi CEO Gernot Döllner, this decision will liberate Audi’s F1 team from their current structure and enable them to make quicker and more decisive choices.
As of August 1, Binotto will take on his new responsibilities.
Döllner stated that their objective is to enhance the entire Formula 1 project’s speed to match that of F1 through implementing clear management structures, delineated responsibilities, minimized interfaces, and streamlined decision-making processes.
In order to fulfill this objective, it is essential for the team to possess the capability to act autonomously and promptly.

After occupying the team principal role at Ferrari since 2019, Binotto left the Italian team at the end of 2022. Fred Vasseur, who previously worked with Sauber, took over as the successor in the Ferrari team principal position.
Binotto, who began his journey with Ferrari in 1995 and later became the head of their engine division, is now set to take on the prestigious position of team boss with Audi. With his vast knowledge and expertise, he is expected to play a crucial role in Audi’s new Formula 1 venture, making a significant impact and bringing his invaluable experience to the table.
Döllner expressed his delight in successfully hiring Mattia Binotto for their ambitious Formula 1 project.
Given his extensive 25+ years of Formula 1 experience, there is no doubt that he will make a significant impact for Audi.
Nico Hulkenberg has been confirmed as one of the drivers for Audi’s future F1 team in 2025, which will be the last season under the Sauber name. This leaves one seat yet to be filled, and drivers like Carlos Sainz, who is leaving Ferrari, have been strongly connected to it.
