Indy 500 race result: Josef Newgarden breaks McLaren hearts with a last-lap pass on Pato O’Ward

Josef Newgarden kisses the bricks

Josef Newgarden won the 108th running of the Indianapolis 500, pulling off a last-lap-of-the-race pass on Pato O’Ward to become the first back-to-back winner since 2002.

The Indianapolis 500, which was initially delayed due to rain on Sunday, eventually commenced four hours later than planned. Despite the setback, the race turned out to be successful.

Josef Newgarden made it back-to-back Indy 500 wins

Marcus Ericsson, the former F1 driver and reigning 2022 Indy 500 champion, was involved in the first caution of the race, which saw a total of 18 different leaders and 49 lead changes throughout.

On the opening lap of the 200-lap race, Tom Blomqvist was responsible for initiating a multi-car collision, resulting in the elimination of Ericsson and Haas F1 reserve driver Pietro Fittipaldi from the competition.

After seven additional cautions and completing 194 laps, O’Ward managed to pass Newgarden and take the lead momentarily, only for the Penske driver to quickly retaliate on the following lap.

O’Ward’s challenge remained unfinished as he approached the white flag, but he swiftly maneuvered around the outside of Newgarden after Turn 4, claiming the lead as they entered Turn 1 on the last lap.

Scott Dixon of Chip Ganassi Racing finished in third place.
