‘Golden race’ of Formula 1 Monaco deserves spot says former driver

While the racing itself might not leave a lasting impression, the backdrop is undeniably remarkable.

Johnny Herbert believes Monaco still has a place on the Formula 1 calendar despite complaints that the race itself is boring.

Herbert strongly believes that Formula 1 should not exclude the Sunday of the Monte Carlo weekend, despite it being a somewhat uneventful day due to the challenges of overtaking with wide cars on narrow streets.

Johnny Herbert backs Monaco for extended F1 stay

In his F1 career, Herbert zoomed around Monaco a total of 10 times. Despite the significant growth in car sizes since then, numerous challenges that drivers encounter nowadays bear a striking resemblance to the ones he confronted during his time.

Despite ongoing complaints about the challenges of the track, Herbert expressed his belief that Monaco should continue to be included in the calendar.

“In Monaco, he informed PlanetF1.com, ‘It continues to captivate us [fans].’ ‘Today, I’ve conversed with a larger number of new American fans than I have in the past five years, and this trend has been steadily increasing.'”

“It’s still Monaco. The guy I was talking to earlier mentioned how he remembers watching it as a kid and that it has always been on his bucket list.”

The Formula 1 race remains the highlight of the season, captivating a large audience. People continue to adore it not only for the thrilling on-track action but also for the excitement that unfolds off the track simultaneously.

“For me, it remains an incredibly special event that continues to captivate people and stands out as the top race of the year, attracting them back time and time again.”

Herbert stated that drivers ought to encounter various challenges over the course of the year, whether it is the different types of racing surfaces or, as seen in Monaco, the intricately narrow track.

“It continues to hold its charm,” he expressed about the race. “I believe it is an event that drivers still take pleasure in, they still relish the difficulty it presents, and it should always test their abilities.”

“During our time in Miami last year, George [Russell] mentioned that the surface was a bit challenging due to some bumps when Lando [Norris] had an accident. He suggested that those bumps should be smoothed out, and that the surface should be made similar to the one in Saudi, which he considered to be perfect. However, it’s important to note that not everything can be replicated exactly.”

“This place stands out from all other destinations we visit, and the challenge it presents should not be comparable. Navigating this circuit requires an entirely different mindset. While some find pleasure in it, others may not. And that’s precisely the way it should be.”
