Nico Hulkenberg’s ‘shock’ reaction to Audi F1 departure of ‘influential’ Seidl

In the 2025 season, Nico Hulkenberg will become a part of Sauber.

Future Audi F1 driver Nico Hulkenberg admitted it was a “shock” to see Andreas Seidl depart the team and be replaced by former Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto.

Hulkenberg’s transfer to Sauber in 2025, prior to Audi’s arrival in 2026, has encountered significant changes as both Seidl and chairman Oliver Hoffmann have stepped down from their positions.

Hulkenberg, who is currently the sole driver confirmed for the team next season, expressed his surprise at the departures of Seidl and Hoffman. He considered these two individuals as influential figures in his decision to join the team.

He informed the media, including PlanetF1.com in Spa, that the two individuals they had made the deal with were undoubtedly influential. Therefore, the sudden alteration came as a surprise.

Gernot Döllner, the CEO of Audi AG, personally informed me on the day the group’s decision was announced.

“The decision to change moving forward is made by the group. I believe that in large projects like this, key individuals in management play crucial roles, but they never solely rely on one or two people. In the F1 industry, everyone is adaptable.”

“I am familiar with Mattia from our previous encounters in the paddock, but we have never collaborated before. However, that is about to change as we will be working together in a few months.”

Despite numerous reports of disruption behind the scenes, Audi’s arrival has been far from smooth. However, Hulkenberg reassured that he remains unconcerned about their future prospects.

“I was definitely taken aback by that news, but I am ready to get back to work and remain excited about being a part of that project,” the 36-year-old expressed. “I am determined to collaborate successfully with Audi to make this venture a great success.”

It is a little disheartening that the two individuals who played a significant role in recruiting me are no longer present. However, my primary focus lies in the project itself. My main aspiration is to join Formula 1 alongside Audi and create a triumphantly memorable journey.
