Toto Wolff reveals ‘what was said’ to Carlos Sainz in Mercedes seat talks

Is there still a possibility for Carlos Sainz to join Mercedes?

Although Mercedes have not made a decision on putting Kimi Antonelli in the car next season, Toto Wolff has told Carlos Sainz that the Italian is Mercedes’ “future”.

After losing his Ferrari race seat to Lewis Hamilton, Sainz found himself without a job for next year’s championship. Initially, there were rumors connecting him to Audi, Mercedes, and Red Bull.

Toto Wolff: We also said that to Carlos Sainz

But while reports claimed he turned down Audi in the hope of landing either the Red Bull or Mercedes seats, he’s down to just Mercedes as a top-team option after Red Bull announced Sergio Perez had signed a new two-year extension.

His Mercedes doesn’t have great chances.

Reports suggest that Mercedes is considering promoting their junior driver Antonelli from Formula 2 to Formula 1. However, Wolff’s recent statement strongly suggests that this is indeed his preferred course of action.

“We just want to concentrate on Andrea Kimi Antonelli,” F1Maximaal quotes the team boss as having told Sky Sports Deutschland.

“He represents our future, and we are dedicated to supporting young drivers. This message was conveyed to Carlos as well.”

However, there is still hope as the Austrian mentioned, “We have not made a definitive decision yet. There are other options that might also catch our attention.”

Regarding Sainz, he dismissed the reports in Canada suggesting that he has already reached an agreement with a team, even though The Objective rumor article did not specify any names.

According to the Spanish daily, a deal had been finalized and confirmed by a law firm located in the driver’s hometown of Madrid.

Sainz scoffed at this, saying: “The only thing I can tell you is there is nothing locked in.

There have been media reports suggesting that I have signed, according to people’s claims.

As I observe those things, it brings a smile to my face. It reminds me of the reports I came across three months ago, claiming that I had committed to Mercedes or Red Bull. Clearly, those speculations were far from reality.

It’s amusing how there are people claiming that I have joined Williams. I find it funny because sometimes media reports like these go unchecked without any consequences.

“It certainly worries me that individuals can engage in such behavior without facing any consequences or support.”

Besides that, whenever there is something I need to share or announce, you all will be the initial recipients of the information, and I will be transparently discussing it here.

“In regards to my future, I will thoroughly analyze and carefully examine all aspects of the contract before signing it.”
