Daniel Cormier defends rival Jon Jones over recent legal issue: ‘It’s his right to do that’

Coming to the aid of his long-time rival Jon Jones, former UFC double champion Daniel Cormier emerges as the unexpected savior among all individuals.

In case you missed it, Jones plead not guilty earlier this week to a pair of misdemeanor assault charges dating back to March. The UFC heavyweight champion allegedly threatened to kill a UFC drug tester when they visited his home for a random sample collection. Jones has denied the allegations and claims the tester “breached standard protocol.”

Regardless of the verdict, Jones’ UFC brand is negatively affected by his continuous involvement in legal troubles over the past decade. It seems that Jones is unable to break free from his own self-destructive behavior. Further information regarding this recent incident will surface, but the fact that the judge imposed pre-trial conditions such as a firearms ban and limitations on drug and alcohol consumption indicates that Jones was not released without consequences.

The MMA community has provided mixed feedback about Jones’ altercation with the UFC drug tester, but Cormier is one former foe coming to his aid. “DC” usually tries to slight Jones whenever he can, but this time around he’s taking his side.

“If I’m being completely honest though, the whole time, I kind of thought that deal was B.S.” said Cormier on his YouTube channel (h/t MMA Fighting). “I feel like he was approached very early, or if I recall correctly it was either early in the morning or late in the evening, where he could have been home having some drinks.

“I understand that we tend to hastily judge Jones based on his previous problems, but the truth is, if a man is enjoying some drinks within the privacy of his own home, why should it matter? It’s his prerogative to do so. If drug testers happen to visit him while he’s slightly intoxicated or not feeling his best, it’s possible that the interactions may not be as pleasant or smooth as they could have been on other occasions. Personally, I’ve always considered this situation to be nonsense. I don’t believe it will lead to any significant consequences.”

Cormier later explained that every aspect of this man’s life is always a story, solely because of his identity. Despite the outcome of current events, living in the spotlight amplifies the attention on him due to his past accomplishments. In truth, this situation is not as significant as previous instances, which were far more severe.

If you have a negative opinion about Jones and you are anticipating consequences, I doubt that it will happen. In my view, this individual was subjected to excessive pressure, and a misdemeanor charge is merely a form of action taken by the court to address any wrongdoing that occurred.

Jones will return for a bench trial in the next two months so be sure to stick with Mania for ongoing updates.
