Kamaru Usman has some names in mind for his return to action.
The former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Welterweight champion has taken his time, resting and recovering throughout 2024. When he eventually gets back in the Octagon, he’ll look to snap a three-fight losing skid that began when he last held the title in his rematch against Leon Edwards at UFC 278 in August 2022.
Usman, 37, appears to be getting closer to his comeback. When he does so, he believes fights with any of Shavkat Rakhmonov, Ian Machado Garry, Jack Della Maddalena, or Belal Muhammad are the right moves.
“There’s a huge chance it comes down to one of these guys,” Usman said on Pound 4 Pound. “These are the streaky guys right now. As I like to think of it, these are the new hot chicks in the division right now, and of course, we love hot chicks. These are the hot prospects in the division right now.
He continued, “If I were to remain in the Welterweight division, I’d have to select one of these individuals. That’s just the way it is. I don’t have any issue with either of them. I believe they are all excellent fighters – tough, youthful, and formidable as they climb up the ranks. It’s my responsibility to demonstrate that they haven’t reached my level yet, although I’ve been in this game for a while. I’ve always been and will continue to be the intimidating force in the Welterweight division.”
Fortunately for Usman, the initial three names he has in his thoughts are all fighters who are currently not scheduled for any matches. Nevertheless, Muhammad will be the next challenger to face the champion, Edwards, in the main event of UFC 304, taking place next weekend on Saturday, July 27, 2024. Given Usman’s recent back-to-back defeats against Edwards in the Welterweight division, it is highly probable that he will require at least one victory before being seriously considered for a title shot.
