A Call from Rick Tocchet Sealed the Deal for Daniel Sprong to Join the Canucks

Forward Daniel Sprong has agreed to a one-year contract worth $975,000, as announced by Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin on Saturday.

Sprong held a media meeting on Monday to elaborate on his contract and explain why Vancouver is the most logical choice for the 27-year-old.

Sprong explained, “My main priority was to find a situation that would bring me happiness and provide a promising opportunity. I had a productive conversation with coach Tocc from Vancouver over the phone. We have a longstanding relationship since my time in Pittsburgh, where he served as my assistant coach. The call went exceptionally well, leaving me feeling content. Consequently, the decision to join Vancouver was an effortless one.”

In 344 NHL games, Sprong has accumulated 85 goals and 74 assists, resulting in a total of 159 points. His most successful season was in 2022-23, while playing for the Seattle Kraken, where he achieved a remarkable career-high of 21 goals. During the recent year, Sprong exhibited impressive performance with the Detroit Red Wings, scoring 18 goals and contributing 25 assists, accumulating a total of 43 points in 76 games.

When inquired about his prospective position with the club, Sprong acknowledges his strengths but also recognizes the areas in his game that require enhancement to gain trust within the Canucks’ system.

Sprong expressed confidence in his scoring abilities, acknowledging areas for improvement. He discussed the support he will receive and the potential opportunities that lie ahead. While he has an understanding of the team’s perspective on his role, he recognizes the importance of playing effectively and delivering results. Sprong emphasized the need to seize opportunities whenever they arise.

Sprong revealed that his circle of friends within the team is quite extensive. In the past, he enjoyed a vacation with Elias Pettersson, met Jake DeBrusk during their draft, and has maintained a close connection ever since. Moreover, he had the opportunity to play alongside Carson Soucy in Seattle. Additionally, he has shared the ice with Teddy Blueger in both Pittsburgh and Scranton (AHL), as well as Kiefer Sherwood in Anaheim and San Diego (AHL).

Sprong expressed that his decision to sign with Vancouver was solidified after speaking with Rick Tocchet over the phone. He mentioned being thrilled about their conversation, especially given that Tocchet is the current recipient of the Jack Adams Award.

Sprong expressed his desire to enhance his defensive skills, a goal he is actively pursuing during the offseason. In addition to working with skills coaches, he is also analyzing past plays to better prepare himself for future challenges.

Sprong acknowledged, “I have identified a certain aspect of my game that requires improvement, which we discussed during our phone conversation. We have devised a plan to address it and enhance our performance in that particular area. Consequently, this will open doors to greater opportunities and, ideally, bring more success to both the team and myself.”

Sprong acknowledges that the Canucks won’t hand him a top-six position, but he is enthusiastic about the opportunity to compete for it during training camp. His goal is to gain the coaching staff’s confidence through his performance in each game.

Sprong finally discussed his consistently strong performance at Rogers Arena over the course of his career. He managed to net two goals and secure two assists across seven games played in Vancouver.

Sprong expressed his fondness for playing in Vancouver, highlighting his exceptional performance in the opposing team’s rink. He praised the city for its delightful cuisine and overall charm, considering it one of his preferred destinations on away games. Admiring its stunning beauty, Sprong eagerly anticipates being a part of the organization and playing 41 games at home.
