Canes Sign Ryan To One-Year Contract

In the 2020-21 season, the defenseman played in four NHL games for Carolina.

RALEIGH, NC. Eric Tulsky, General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has signed defenseman Joakim Ryan to a one-year, two-way contract. Ryan will receive $775,000 at the NHL level and $110,000 at the American Hockey League (AHL) level during the 2024-25 season.

“We are glad to have Joakim back in Carolina after his time here in 2020-21,” said Tulsky. “His veteran leadership and experience at the highest levels will be a great asset to our organization.”

Ryan, who is currently 31 years old, has played in various NHL teams such as San Jose, Los Angeles, and Carolina from 2017 to 2021. During this time, he accumulated 24 points, with 4 goals and 20 assists, in a total of 145 NHL games. In the 2020-21 season, he played four games with the Hurricanes. In his career, Ryan has participated in 23 playoff games and has contributed with one assist. Notably, he played in all 20 playoff games with the Sharks in 2019, helping them reach the Western Conference Final.

In addition to his NHL experience, Ryan has also played in the AHL with teams like Worcester, San Jose, and Chicago. From 2015 to 2021, he played 144 AHL games and managed to earn 83 points, including 13 goals and 70 assists.

For the past three seasons, Ryan has been playing in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) with Malmo IF. During his time there, he has played in 156 games, accumulating 64 points with 17 goals and 47 assists. In the 2023-24 season, he had an impressive performance with 18 points, consisting of 7 goals and 11 assists, in 52 SHL contests. He also served as one of the alternate captains for the Redhawks.

Before his professional career, Ryan played college hockey at Cornell for four seasons from 2011 to 2015. Throughout his college career, he played in 123 games and recorded 78 points, with 19 goals and 59 assists. During his senior year, he served as an alternate captain and received All-ECAC First Team honors after contributing 14 points, including 1 goal and 13 assists, in 23 games.

Ryan also had a one-season stint in the USHL in 2010-11, playing for Dubuque. During that season, he earned 32 points, with 3 goals and 29 assists, in 53 games.

Internationally, Ryan has represented Sweden and won a bronze medal at the 2010 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. He was originally drafted by the San Jose Sharks in the seventh round, 198th overall, of the 2012 NHL Draft.
