Colleen Allen recognized as Disability Pride Month Game Changers honoree
The President and CEO of Autism Alliance of Michigan is actively involved in spearheading initiatives aimed at elevating expectations and broadening opportunities for individuals affected by autism.
DETROIT — For Colleen Allen, who has been President and CEO of the Autism Alliance of Michigan (AAoM) since 2012, autism advocacy has always been at the forefront of her life.
Allen shared, “For me, the personal aspect of this work is truly understanding the challenges and experiences my aunt and uncle have faced over the years while caring for my cousin, who has autism and needs round-the-clock assistance. It brings a deeper meaning to what I do.”
AAoM, established in 2009 and headquartered in Bingham Farms, Mich., strives to elevate expectations and broaden prospects for individuals and families affected by autism. Allen stated that this non-profit entity has catered to over 40,000 individuals throughout the state, with the numbers progressively growing each year.
Allen stated that the organization is consistently engaged in its work. It aims to assist families on an individual basis, focusing on each transactional interaction. However, the organization also acknowledges the importance of addressing the root causes that lead people to seek their help. This understanding drives their prioritization of advocacy work.
As part of Disability Pride Month, the Detroit Red Wings, Detroit Tigers, and Comerica Bank are honoring Allen as their second Game Changers recipient, joining the celebration in July.
AAoM’s initiatives tackle the systemic barriers faced by individuals with autism through its three Pillars of Work – Navigation, Education, and Employment.
Allen expressed, “Our alliance is genuine. Collaborating with various stakeholders, including hospitals, homes, and community mental health centers, has been an enriching experience. As a separate entity, we operate independently from most service systems. Our primary objective is to assist families in finding the most accessible and evidence-based services.”
Allen emphasized the importance of reducing autism stigma, as individuals with autism possess hidden talents and skills that often go unnoticed.
Allen expressed his support for organizations hosting sensory-friendly days at movie theaters, acknowledging their significance. However, he believes that instead of limiting community inclusion to a single day, efforts should be made throughout the entire year. Allen emphasizes the importance of expanding inclusion through means such as education, training, raising awareness, and utilizing media platforms.
Allen expressed her delight in being honored as a Game Changers recipient, but she strongly believes that the recognition should not be solely for her to relish.
“I must emphasize that Autism Alliance is the catalyst for transformation,” Allen emphasized. “While I am reluctant to take sole credit, our dedicated board and staff have played an integral role in this extraordinary achievement. We pride ourselves on being a highly influential organization, and this recognition holds great significance for us. It validates our unwavering commitment to effecting profound change within the community, by expanding possibilities and fostering higher aspirations for individuals and families impacted by autism.”
