D-CAMP: ‘Some goals, some fun’ as camp ends with scrimmage

FORT LAUDERDALE – The Florida Panthers officially closed the book on their annual development with a spirited intrasquad scrimmage at Baptist Health IcexPlex on Thursday.

“The outcome was as anticipated,” remarked Bryan McCabe, Panthers Director of Player Personnel. “We witnessed goals, enjoyed some excitement, and most importantly, everyone remained injury-free. Fingers crossed, that’s the most crucial aspect.”

Once again, the game showcased an exclusive format.

The 38 prospects were divided into two squads and competed in three 15-minute periods. Each period began with 5-on-5 gameplay for the first five minutes, followed by 4-on-4 for the next five minutes. As expected, the final five minutes of each period involved 3-on-3 gameplay.

Following each period, three skaters from each team were sent to participate in a shootout.

Ultimately, Red emerged victorious with a 3-1 triumph against White.

Here’s how it went down.

In the first period, during the 4-on-4 action, Red’s Mikulas Hovorka delivered an impressive shot from the blue line, overpowering Cooper Black and giving his team a 1-0 lead.

Hovorka, a highly experienced player at the camp, previously had a professional career in Czechia during the 2023-24 season. In April, he secured a two-year entry-level contract with Florida.

Hovorka exclaimed, “I am incredibly thrilled! This week has been the greatest so far. I am eagerly anticipating the main camp.”

Red’s Gracyn Sawchyn and Sandis Vilmans both found the net during the shootout.

In the goalie position, Olof Glifford, a fifth-round pick in 2023, demonstrated flawless performance for the Red team during the period.

Oliver Okuliar managed to level the score during the second period by successfully beating Tyler Muszelik on a breakaway, resulting in a 1-1 tie with the action taking place at 3-on-3.

Jack Devine, setting him free during the play, executed a remarkable tap-pass in the neutral zone, resulting in the primary assist.

Devine, who was selected in the seventh round of the 2022 draft, will be returning to the University of Denver as a senior in the 2024-25 season. Having already won two national championships at the university, Devine will now strive to secure a third ring.

Devine, who scored a career-high of 27 goals last season and ranked fourth in the nation, expressed his gratitude for being able to end the season with a victory. He regarded it as an incredible achievement and considered the year to be exceptionally memorable and fortunate.

Red’s Jakub Kos found the back of the net during the shootout, while White’s Ludvig Jansson also managed to score a goal.

In the third period, Josh Davies seized a loose puck in the slot and successfully outplayed Callum Tung to secure the game-winning goal, thereby granting Red a 2-1 lead.

Owen Lindmark capitalized on the vacant net towards the end of the period, extending the score to 3-1.

To make things even better, Hunter St. Martin added an extra goal, securing a point for Red during the shootout.

St. Martin, who was selected in the sixth round of the 2024 NHL Draft a few weeks ago, is among a group of players who have recently embarked on their journey with the Panthers organization.

The young forward expressed, “You’re gradually acquiring the knowledge of what it truly means to become a professional.”

In general, every potential customer is leaving with an improved mood compared to when they first arrived.

McCabe expressed that although it is only the beginning, the camp is a positive and promising step for them.
