Joining Penguins a "Full-Circle Moment" for Matt Grzelcyk
Pittsburgh holds significant milestones in Matt Grzelcyk’s career.
He was chosen by the Bruins during the 2012 NHL Draft, held at PPG Paints Arena, in the third round. The defenseman made his debut in the same building on December 14, 2016.
The next year, the hockey player, originally from Massachusetts, netted his inaugural NHL goal during a game against the Penguins. The memorable moment took place the day after Thanksgiving, with his family and friends present to witness the achievement at TD Garden.
After spending parts of eight seasons in Boston, Grzelcyk (pronounced GRIHZ-lihk) has been reflecting on those moments quite extensively since he signed a one-year contract with Pittsburgh on the opening day of free agency.
“It feels like destiny, and when I speak to others, it’s evident that this was meant to happen,” Grzelcyk expressed during a virtual press conference. “Reuniting with the Penguins is an added bonus… those were incredible moments, and I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to return.”
Grzelcyk speaks with the media
Grzelcyk acknowledges that transitioning from the city and NHL team he has been with for his entire career will require some adaptation. However, he is optimistic that this fresh start will offer him the motivation needed to bounce back from a disappointing season. Having consistently achieved 20 or more points over four consecutive seasons, Grzelcyk’s performance declined due to a minor injury that sidelined him and some struggles with confidence.
Grzelcyk, who stands at 5-foot-10 and weighs 180 pounds, expressed his struggle with being placed on LTIR and missing 10 games. He found it challenging to readjust to the speed of the game upon returning. He acknowledged that it wasn’t solely due to the injury, but also a loss of confidence along the way. As a player, regaining confidence midseason can be tough. However, Grzelcyk is determined to leave those difficulties in the past and has had a productive summer. He is highly motivated to prove himself once again on the ice.
Grzelcyk began training about a week or two after the year ended to ensure he’ll feel his best throughout the season. But he has taken some time for golf, including a round or two with the newest member of Pittsburgh’s coaching staff, assistant David Quinn.
Grzelcyk and Quinn developed a close bond during their time together at Boston University, which has continued to thrive even after Grzelcyk moved on from college. Reflecting on their connection, Grzelcyk expressed admiration for Quinn, labeling him as a phenomenal coach.
“He possesses great motivational skills that inspire us to perform at our best. He maintains high expectations, not only for us but also for himself. However, he is equally fantastic outside the rink, as he excels in creating strong connections with his players.”
Quinn is set to supervise a defensive line, which includes Erik Karlsson, a player he had previously coached and who had won a Norris Trophy during their tenure in San Jose. Grzelcyk is excited about being a part of this D corps, alongside the likes of Karlsson and Kris Letang. He feels ready to skate alongside either player if the chance presents itself.
“I’ve had the opportunity to play alongside Charlie McAvoy, whom I consider to be one of the top defensemen in the NHL,” he expressed. “These individuals are truly exceptional players, and my aim is to support them in the best possible way, understand their playing style, and closely observe their techniques.”
Later this summer, Grzelcyk will have a reunion with McAvoy and other former teammates at David Pastrnak’s wedding in Czechia. After that, he will head to Pittsburgh to meet his new teammates. Grzelcyk arrived in town last weekend to search for a place to live and expressed his love for the city.
I am extremely thrilled to arrive at the destination, especially since everyone had nothing but positive feedback. Our experience last weekend was fantastic, and I am eagerly anticipating my visit in September.
