‘My heart was set on coming to Detroit and being back’: Kane re-signs one-year deal with Red Wings

The 35-year-old forward is thrilled to contribute to the club’s continued progress after a successful 2023-24 season.

DETROIT — The Red Wings may have a lot of new faces on their roster for the 2024-25 season, but a clutch veteran presence will be staying in Detroit.

Patrick Kane has officially committed to the Red Wings, as they announced his re-signing on June 30 for a one-year contract. Despite being eligible for unrestricted free agency on July 1, Kane confidently expressed his desire to remain with Detroit from the start.

“In terms of my personal preference, I was determined to return to Detroit and be back in the city,” stated Kane during a media Zoom call on Monday. “I genuinely believed it was the perfect match for me last year. I have a deep affection for the team, and our experience living there was extremely satisfying.”

Steve Yzerman, the Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Red Wings, expressed his satisfaction in reaching a mutually beneficial agreement with Kane.

“On July 4th, Yzerman mentioned that we successfully negotiated a contract incorporating bonuses, granting us added flexibility with our salary cap. This enables us to decide whether to utilize it during this season or carry it forward to the following year, depending on the progress of the current season.”

After undergoing hip resurfacing surgery on June 1, 2023, 35-year-old forward Kane wasted no time in adapting to the Red Wings in the 2023-24 season. He signed a one-year contract with the club on Nov. 28 and managed to accumulate an impressive 47 points (20 goals, 27 assists) in just 50 games.

“In my first season in Detroit, I was fortunate to have ample opportunities to play in favorable situations, such as power play and top-six minutes,” Kane expressed. “My aim is to elevate my performance to the next level in the upcoming year.”

Last season, Kane truly embodied his “Showtime” nickname as he spearheaded the Red Wings with an impressive tally of seven game-winning goals, three of which were overtime winners.

Kane expressed his admiration for Ken Daniels, a broadcaster for Bally Sports Detroit, stating that he could watch the memorable moments and calls made by Daniels repeatedly throughout his life. Kane specifically mentioned the exhilarating calls made by Daniels during some of his own goals, emphasizing how these moments give him a sense of excitement. He expressed his desire to continue creating such unforgettable moments in the future.

Kane, who had an illustrious 16-season career with the Chicago Blackhawks, securing three Stanley Cup victories, expressed how Red Wings fans swiftly made Detroit feel like a welcoming home.

Kane expressed his adoration for the fans, acknowledging their warm reception. Transitioning from Chicago to Detroit, he anticipated uncertainty due to the intense rivalry between the two cities. However, he was pleasantly surprised by the overwhelming support and appreciation shown by the fans.

Prior to joining the Red Wings last season, Kane was already familiar with Detroit.

Kane relocated from his hometown of Buffalo, N.Y., in 2003 to pursue youth hockey in the metropolitan area. During this time, he resided in Birmingham, Mich. with former Red Wings forward Pat Verbeek. Additionally, Kane spent two seasons (2004-06) playing for the U.S. National Team Development Program, which was situated in Ann Arbor at that period.

Kane explained that his decision to re-sign with the Red Wings was influenced by the level of comfort he felt off the ice.

Kane expressed his astonishment at the suburbs in Detroit, stating that he had resided there at the age of 14 but was unaware of their pleasantness and suitability for living and raising a family upon his return. He highlighted the numerous opportunities available, including options for playing hockey and the availability of schools. Kane particularly admired the layout of Little Caesars Arena, which conveniently housed both the practice rink and the game rink in one location. Additionally, he praised the first-class treatment provided by the organization, making it an attractive prospect for free agents or players interested in joining the Red Wings.

Kane’s main focus for this season is to maintain good health. Last summer, the experienced forward’s training was restricted as a result of his hip resurfacing surgery, and his rehabilitation continued throughout the 2023-24 season.

Kane’s offseason doesn’t fall under the same circumstances.

“I’m feeling amazing,” Kane expressed. “I’m genuinely elated with how my body is progressing, especially with my hip seamlessly integrating into my overall physical state. This sense of unity and wholeness has been my ultimate quest during the initial year following my surgery. I’m experiencing a genuine sense of well-being and rejuvenation.”
