Prospect Q&A: Jayden Perron

Prospect Q&A: Jayden Perron

This week’s Development Camp offers an opportunity to learn more about the talented right-handed sniper.

RALEIGH, NC. Every year when the NHL Draft comes around, at least one member of the Carolina Hurricanes’ brass talks about how the team wants to draft not just quality players, but quality people.

When it comes to 2023 third-round pick Jayden Perron, it doesn’t get much better.

The 19-year-old from Winnipeg, known for their exceptional kindness, graciously took the time to respond to a few of our questions during Prospects Development Camp this week.

How was your first year at North Dakota?

Playing in front of those fans was an incredible experience that I thoroughly enjoyed. It was quite exhilarating and I had a great time.

Regardless of the opponent, each night was either completely sold out or nearly sold out, making the atmosphere incredibly enjoyable.

What were some of the biggest adjustments for you, going from playing in the USHL to the college game?

I gained the understanding that college games are never easy, and it’s crucial to adapt to this reality. There’s no room for complacency; you can’t afford to underestimate any opponent.

The challenge was enjoyable, adding a fun element to the situation. However, it was likely the most significant aspect.

What were some things you felt like you excelled at, or what was your biggest strength?

You can utilize this approach in the game, regardless of your skill level.

I immediately felt confident about it, which greatly contributed to my progress.

You got a close-up view of Jackson Blake’s season that landed him as a Hobey Baker finalist.  How special was that?

The atmosphere was electric. It was undeniably enjoyable to have the opportunity to watch him every evening.

While everyone observes the highlights, it is the guys on our team who truly witness his relentless dedication and intensive practice sessions.

It translates into the game and is incredibly enjoyable to observe.

You were here at Prospects Development Camp last year. What did you learn there that you brought to this year, or knew coming in that benefited you?

In my opinion, the most important thing at the beginning was simply getting comfortable with the guys.

Having gained insight into the requirements, I now have the opportunity to witness players from various parts of the world. I make an effort to learn from them and understand the efforts needed to reach the next level, as everyone here is exceptionally talented.

In college, everyone is good, but here, everyone is exceptional.

What are some areas of your game that you’d like to grow or improve on?

My goal is to continue improving my skating skills, specifically in the area of speed. I am determined to become faster with each practice session.

It is evident that NHL players consistently perform at top speed during their games. I believe that adopting such an approach would greatly advantage me.

I’ve been working towards gaining some strength and muscle mass, so I believe it would greatly benefit me as well.

When you do watch NHL games, who are some that you really enjoy their game?

Connor McDavid is definitely an outstanding player, but I also find great enjoyment in watching Artemi Panarin.

Watching him is such a delight. His exceptional skills and constant display of impressive plays make it impossible to look away.

Let’s finish up with some off-ice questions. Favorite food?

“French fries.”

Do you have a favorite place to get them from?

“Nope, doesn’t matter.”

Favorite restaurant?

Earl’s in Winnipeg is a popular destination.

Favorite thing to get there?

“Steak and fries.”

Favorite song at the moment?

“‘Sleeve’ by Nate Smith.”

Who is the funniest guy in the room this week?

Since I’ve had the opportunity to share a room with Blaker (Jackson Blake), I suppose I’ll stick with him. He’s consistently enjoyable to be around.
