Red Wings sign Michael Brandsegg-Nygård to three-year, entry-level contract

DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings today signed forward Michael Brandsegg-Nygård to a three-year, entry-level contract with an average annual value of $975,000.

In the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, which took place in Las Vegas on June 28-29, Brandsegg-Nygård, 18, was chosen by the Red Wings as the 15th overall pick. Following the draft, he participated in Detroit’s Development Camp from July 1-5 at the BELFOR Training Center in Little Caesars Arena. Standing at 6-foot-1 and weighing 207 pounds, this forward spent most of the 2023-24 season playing for Mora IK in Sweden’s second-highest professional league. In 41 regular-season games, he recorded 18 points (8 goals, 10 assists) with a plus-three rating and 19 penalty minutes. During the playoffs, he contributed 10 points (4 goals, 6 assists) and eight penalty minutes in 12 games, aiding Mora IK in reaching the Semifinals for the second year in a row. Additionally, Brandsegg-Nygård played seven games with Mora IK’s under-20 team in Sweden’s top junior league, tallying 12 points (5 goals, 7 assists) along with a plus-nine rating and 10 penalty minutes. Hailing from Oslo, Norway, Brandsegg-Nygård made history as the first Norwegian-born player to be selected in the first round of an NHL Entry Draft.

In the 2022-23 season, Brandsegg-Nygård joined Mora IK and had an impressive performance, earning three points (1-2-3) in 11 games, along with a plus-three rating and six penalty minutes. Additionally, he showcased his skills with the under-20 team, contributing 38 points (17-21-38) in 35 games, and also recorded 10 points (5-5-10) in four games at the under-18 level. Before his time in Sweden, Brandsegg-Nygård made his debut as a professional player at just 16 years old with Vålerenga in the EliteHockey Ligaen. During the 2021-22 season, he played in eight games in Norway’s top professional league and gained valuable experience. He also had an impressive record with Vålerenga’s under-20 team, accumulating 42 points (24-18-42) in 25 games, and contributed 19 points (10-9-19) in seven games with the under-18 squad during the same season. In the 2020-21 season, Brandsegg-Nygård led Norway’s under-18 circuit with 16 goals in eight games.

During the 2024 IIHF World Championship, Brandsegg-Nygård showcased his skills for Norway on the international stage. He impressively accumulated five points (3 goals, 2 assists) in seven games, earning recognition as one of his country’s top three performers. Additionally, he represented Norway in the 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship, contributing five points (3 goals, 2 assists) in five games. Earlier, Brandsegg-Nygård triumphed at the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship Division I, securing a gold medal while amassing five points (2 goals, 3 assists) in five games. Furthermore, he achieved a silver medal at the 2022 IIHF World Under-18 Championship Division I, making four points (2 goals, 2 assists) in five appearances.
