Tarasenko excited to bring offense and experience to Detroit

After aiding the Panthers in winning the 2024 Stanley Cup championship, a 32-year-old forward has recently signed a two-year free-agent contract with the Red Wings.

DETROIT — Vladimir Tarasenko officially became a member of the Detroit Red Wings when he signed a two-year free-agent contract on July 3, but the 32-year-old forward arrives in Detroit already knowing a handful of his new teammates.

During his initial 11-year stint in the NHL, Tarasenko was a member of the St. Louis Blues. From 2020 to 2022, he shared the ice with goalie Ville Husso. In the following season of 2022-23, Tarasenko joined the New York Rangers, where he became teammates with Tyler Motte and Patrick Kane.

Tarasenko reached out to Kane to gather more information about Detroit while contemplating his free-agency choices.

During a Zoom call with the media on July 8, Tarasenko expressed his admiration for the team’s performance last year. He also shared that after careful consideration with his family, they collectively concluded that joining the Detroit team would be the optimal choice for their future. Tarasenko conveyed their excitement for this new chapter in their lives and eagerly anticipated their arrival in Detroit to settle in and commence Training Camp.

Last season, Tarasenko played for both the Ottawa Senators and the Florida Panthers, tallying 55 points (23 goals, 32 assists) in 76 regular-season games. Additionally, he contributed nine points (five goals, four assists) in 24 playoff games with the Panthers, playing a crucial role in securing the team’s inaugural Stanley Cup victory.

Tarasenko, who was initially chosen by St. Louis as the 16th overall pick in the 2010 NHL Draft, has accumulated a total of 629 points (comprising 293 goals and 336 assists) throughout his career spanning 751 games with the Blues, Rangers, Senators, and Panthers.

Kane expressed his belief that Tarasenko would greatly benefit the group. According to Kane, Tarasenko is a proven winner who plays with immense intensity and determination. Kane believes that not only young players, but all players, will witness Tarasenko’s work ethic and commitment during every shift. Kane also highlighted Tarasenko’s achievement of winning multiple Stanley Cups, which further attests to his abilities.

Tarasenko’s arrival in Detroit will undoubtedly enhance the Red Wings’ offensive capabilities, according to Steve Yzerman, the Executive Vice President and General Manager.

Yzerman commented on Tarasenko’s playing style, stating, “Tarasenko brings a unique approach compared to our wingers Lucas (Raymond), Patrick Kane, and Alex DeBrincat. He’s a left-shot player who will solidify our top-six, top-nine lineup. He’s a skilled scorer with a direct playing style, showcasing his size and strength as he confidently charges towards the net. We believe he will be a valuable addition to our team.”

Tarasenko, a staunch right-winger, expressed his willingness to adapt to the left side or embrace any role assigned by Detroit’s coaching staff for the upcoming season.

Tarasenko mentioned that he switched to the left position for the first time in my life during the previous season. Throughout my career, I have always been accustomed to playing on the right side. It took some time for me to grasp the team’s strategies and playing style. However, as long as you are familiar with your role on the ice, I believe that the wing you play on doesn’t make much of a difference.

Throughout his 12-year NHL career, Tarasenko acknowledged that although he gained recognition for his offensive skills, he has developed a newfound appreciation for the defensive aspect of the game.

Tarasenko expressed, “Let me clarify, I still have a strong desire to score goals. However, it’s not just about personal achievements for me. I also have certain team goals in mind. I’ve never had the intention to neglect defense. Occasionally, I may struggle to comprehend the best actions to take. Nevertheless, with each passing year and more playing experience, I’ve come to realize that prioritizing defense is crucial for our team’s ultimate goal of winning the championship.”
