Wednesday, June 5’s MLB schedule begins with an afternoon showdown between the Atlanta Braves (34-24) and Boston Red Sox (30-31) at 1:35 p.m. ET.

Last night, the Braves triumphed over the Red Sox with a resounding 8-3 victory as they played the first of their two scheduled games at Fenway Park. Ozzie Albies, the seasoned infielder, emerged as Atlanta’s standout player of the day, delivering an impressive performance with two hits, a home run, and three RBIs in four at-bats.

Is it possible for Atlanta to secure a series sweep with another victory? Alternatively, will Boston manage to level their win-loss ratio by finding a way to win?

In this Braves vs. Red Sox preview, we will address these inquiries by examining my forecast and the top MLB wagers for today.

  • Atlanta has had the Under hit in 14 out of their last 19 road games.

Braves vs Red Sox Predictions & MLB Picks Today (6/5)

In order for the Red Sox to achieve a split in this two-game series, they must deliver a more comprehensive performance than their display yesterday. Despite holding a 3-2 lead heading into the top of the fifth inning, Boston was unable to maintain it as Atlanta scored five consecutive runs for the remainder of the game.

The Red Sox’s recent difficulties at home were evident in Tuesday’s defeat. Over their last 10 games at Fenway Park, they have a record of 3-7, and have been outscored by an average of 3.6 runs in those losses. Furthermore, their winning percentage as the home favorite this season, which stands at 37.5%, is the fifth-worst in the Majors.

In the meantime, the Braves have been performing exceptionally well, being deemed the underdog on the road only on two occasions in 2024. Their success rate in away matchups stands impressively at 55.6%, ranking them eighth among all teams. Furthermore, in three out of their last six away contests, the Braves have managed to score a minimum of eight runs.

Furthermore, the Braves have shown their ease in competing at Fenway Park. Under the leadership of Brian Snitker, the team has achieved an impressive record of 8 wins and 3 losses in their most recent 11 away games against the Red Sox. Moreover, they have outscored their opponents by an average of 1.7 runs per game in these matchups.

The Braves have owned the Red Sox at Fenway Park in recent years.

In order for the Braves to achieve a series sweep, a strong performance from Spencer Schwellenbach is crucial. Unfortunately, the 24-year-old right-handed pitcher did not deliver in his first Major League Baseball outing against the Washington Nationals last week. He struggled, conceding three earned runs and a home run on five hits, resulting in a disappointing 7-2 loss.

Atlanta can take solace in the fact that Boston’s Nick Pivetta hasn’t been performing at his best either. Pivetta, a fourth-round pick in 2013, has been inconsistent this season. In his past two starts, he surrendered seven earned runs, five walks, 10 hits, and a home run in 8 2/3 innings. Unfortunately for Pivetta, he ended up with losses in both games.

Not to mention, Pivetta has also maintained a disappointing 7.51 ERA in his previous 12 matchups against the Braves.

Taking the above into account, let’s back an Atlanta win today. The Red Sox have been underwhelming to watch at Fenway Park all season and yesterday’s loss further highlighted that fact. If the Braves bats get to Pivetta early, this game could quickly turn ugly.

Having said that, the best bet is to take the Braves as moneyline underdogs and move on.

Ozuna’s performance this season has been outstanding, consistently reaching base and accumulating an impressive 130 total bases. With a remarkable on-base + slugging percentage of .999, he currently leads the NL in this category. In his recent 17 games, Ozuna has gathered 38 total bases, averaging 2.2 per game. Additionally, he has surpassed the set expectations nine times, including three out of his last five games.

Furthermore, Ozuna boasts an impressive record of 26 total bases in 12 previous matchups against Pivetta, maintaining a solid slash line of .308/.296/1.000. It goes without saying that it would be quite unexpected if he doesn’t manage to secure at least a double or more on the bases in today’s game.
