The Omaha eight includes the top four national seeds: Tennessee at #1, Kentucky at #2, Texas A&M at #3, and North Carolina at #4. Additionally, Florida State at #8, NC State at #10, and Virginia at #12 are also part of this prestigious group.

Despite not being one of the top 16 seeds, the sole team in the 2024 CWS field cannot be considered an underdog, even though they possess a 34-28 record, concluded their conference season with a 13-17 standing, and entered the regional round as a #3 seed.

The team that fits this description is the Florida Gators, who were the national runner-up last year. Despite struggling in the regular season this year, they miraculously secured a spot in the field of 64. While they have the second highest championship odds, with only NC State having longer odds, the Gators possess a secret weapon in the form of the talented Jac Caglianone, who is considered the best player in the tournament. It would be unwise to underestimate the Gators’ potential.

On Saturday evening, the Gators will have a chance to prove themselves as they kick off their match against the team favored to win it all, Texas A&M. Who Are the Favorites to Win the 2024 College World Series?

Texas A&M (+265)

Is it possible for the Aggies to secure their inaugural College World Series championship without their top hitter? Unfortunately, during the first inning of their Super Regional game against Oregon, Braden Montgomery, the team’s standout slugger, sustained a lower leg injury that will sideline him for the remainder of the season.

After transferring from Stanford last summer, Montgomery had an outstanding season, achieving a batting average of .322 along with 27 home runs and 85 RBI. Due to this impressive performance, he is expected to be chosen among the top 10 picks in the upcoming MLB Draft.

Despite Montgomery’s absence, the Aggies triumphed over the Ducks in three games, securing their spot in Omaha for the second time in three seasons. Surprisingly, oddsmakers have great confidence in their ability to win the championship, even without Montgomery. In fact, they are slightly ahead of top-ranked Tennessee in the betting odds.

While Montgomery’s absence may limit their impact, A&M’s lineup still boasts two formidable players at the forefront. Freshman sensation Gavin Grahovac (.306, 22 HR, 63 RBI) and Jace Laviolette (.314, 28 HR, 77 RBI) continue to dominate and contribute significantly to the team’s success.

The Aggies’ ability to cause significant impact at the plate is noteworthy, but it is their strong pitching arms that could be the primary factor in their success in Omaha, where scoring runs is often challenging.

In the event of taking the lead, they have the option to rely on the abilities of Evan Aschenbeck (6-1 record, 1.66 ERA, 0.80 WHIP in 28 appearances), Chris Cortez (9-3 record, 2.83 ERA in 22 appearances), Brad Rudis (6-0 record, 2.23 ERA in 23 appearances), and Shane Sdao (5-1 record, 2.96 ERA in 20 appearances) to effectively close the game.

The only drawback of Texas A&M is their high strikeout rate at the plate. Throughout the season, they have accumulated 562 strikeouts, averaging 9.1 strikeouts per game.

Tennessee (+275)

Despite Tennessee’s success over the past four seasons, the team has not been able to achieve their ultimate goal of reaching the mountaintop, which would be a historic accomplishment for the program.

Could this be the year they’ve been waiting for? Despite a shocking loss in Game 2 of their Super Regional against unexpected contender Evansville, they came back strong in Game 3 with an impressive 12-1 victory, hitting seven home runs.

The Vols, just like the ladies, have a strong affinity for the long ball. They have impressively smashed a total of 173 home runs throughout this season. Taking charge as the leadoff hitter, Christian Moore boasts an outstanding batting average of .375, along with an impressive 32 home runs and 71 runs batted in (RBI). Supporting him is a powerful lineup, with five players hitting 18 or more homers and twelve players hitting five or more.

To what extent will their remarkable power propel them in a baseball field where many strong hits often result in frustrating outs? Despite not leading them to triumph in the 2021 or 2023 College World Series journeys, they might have to focus on converting some of those home run swings into doubles in order to thrive.

While the Vols’ exceptional performance at the plate often overshadows their pitching, it’s worth noting that they possess a significant amount of talent on the mound. If this talent can shine in Omaha, they won’t have to heavily depend on their offense.

Kentucky (+575)

In the current College World Series bracket, seven out of the eight teams have previously participated in Omaha. Additionally, all seven teams have made appearances in at least one of the last five editions of the CWS.

Kentucky stands as the sole first-timer in the competition, raising the question of whether the Wildcats can clinch a championship in their inaugural showing.

In terms of statistics, many numbers fail to stand out like Texas A&M, Tennessee, and other teams in the field.

The Wildcats possess a considerable amount of power, primarily driven by their dynamic duo, Ryan Waldschmidt (.346 average, 14 home runs, 46 runs batted in) and Ryan Nicholson (.299 average, 21 home runs, 61 runs batted in). Additionally, the team has excelled in stealing bases, having successfully stolen 117 bases. Waldschmidt leads the pack with 24 successful steals out of 31 attempts, closely followed by Emilien Pitre with 25 successful steals out of 34 attempts.

The value of speed becomes invaluable at Charles Schwab Field, as it can determine the outcome between an early elimination or a journey towards the championship series, especially when manufacturing runs is crucial.

Despite the Wildcats’ 5.02 team ERA, do not be discouraged from placing bets on them.
