The CONMEBOL Copa América 2024 kicks off this week in the United States, spanning across 14 host cities. Renowned as the most esteemed soccer competition in the Western Hemisphere, it brings together teams from North and South America to determine the ultimate champion. In 2021, Brazil hosted the Copa América and faced defeat in the final match against the defending champion, Argentina. Following this, Lionel Messi and his teammates triumphed in the 2022 World Cup. Now, they are vying to augment their accolades and safeguard their Copa América title.
This page is your ultimate guide to all the essential information about this year’s Copa America, encompassing:

Let’s get right into it!
CONMEBOL Copa America 2024 Betting Guide
Messi and the Argentinian team are aiming to retain their Copa America title.
Copa America 2024 Tournament Layout
In the Copa America 2024, there are 16 teams participating, divided into four groups of four teams. Each team competes against the other three teams in their group in a single 90-minute match, regardless of the outcome. Teams earn 3 points for a victory, 1 point for a draw, and 0 points for a loss. Following the completion of all three group stage matches, the top two teams from each group, determined by their points, progress to the Quarterfinals.
After filling 8 spots in the Quarterfinals, the tournament transitions to standard bracket play with single elimination matches. In the knockout round, if a tie occurs after 90 minutes, teams will participate in two 15-minute extra time periods, followed by a penalty shootout if needed. The bracket play continues until only one team remains as the ultimate winner. Additionally, a 3rd place match will be held for the semifinalists who did not advance.
Both Argentina and Uruguay have an equal number of 15 Copa America Titles each. However, Uruguay has not reached the final since their triumph in 2011. Brazil, on the other hand, is another powerhouse in this tournament, boasting 9 Titles of their own. Paraguay, Chile, and Peru have all secured 2 Copa America Titles, while Bolivia and Colombia have one each. Mexico has finished as the Copa America Runner Up twice.
Copa America 2024 Group Preview
In the Copa America Tournament of 2016, we witnessed the participation of only 16 teams, a number that has been unique in the history of the tournament.
We will be having a standard Group Stage play with some intriguing draws. In order to advance, teams must secure a position in the Top 2 of their respective groups, making the games highly competitive. The primary determining factor will be the total points earned, however, if teams are still on par, the following tiebreakers will be applied in the given order.
Group Tiebreakers
- Total Points
- Goal Differential
- Goals Scored
Each team should be separated, but if necessary, the criteria can also be applied to the individual games between the tied teams. Now, let’s examine these Groups where teams will battle for their place in the knockout round!
World Rank in parentheses.
Group A
- Argentina (1)
- Peru (32)
- Chile (42)
- Canada (49)
Argentina is the clear favorite to win this group without much difficulty. Despite having a higher world ranking, Peru is not favored by the oddsmakers to come out as the ultimate winner. Nevertheless, the battle for second place in this group is wide open. The Canadian team, led by Alphonso Davies and Jonathan David, is highly motivated and aiming to shock the competition in the Copa America tournament.
Group B
- Mexico (14)
- Ecuador (31)
- Venezuela (54)
- Jamaica (55)
Mexico is considered the underdog in this group, although they have been the most successful North American team in this tournament, reaching the Title Match twice. However, this year, experts believe that the USA has a higher probability of winning the entire tournament. Nevertheless, if Mexico remains focused and emerges victorious in this group, they will likely face a comparatively easier opponent in the Quarterfinals, potentially leading to a Semifinal encounter with Argentina and their star player, Messi.
Similar to Group A, the favored team is expected to dominate and breeze through the Group Stage, while the second-place spot remains uncertain.
Is it possible for the United States to make a significant impact in the Copa America this year?
Group C
- United States (11)
- Uruguay (15)
- Panama (45)
- Bolivia (85)
The battle for supremacy in Group C appears to be an exhilarating contest primarily between the United States hosts and a determined Uruguay team. The scheduling of the final group match between these two teams suggests a thrilling showdown that could determine the group winner. Despite Panama’s recent success in winning their last two World Cup Qualifiers and gaining some momentum for the Copa America, their chances of causing an upset are deemed low by Vegas odds. However, they cannot be completely ruled out as potential spoilers.
Group D
- Brazil (5)
- Colombia (12)
- Costa Rica (52)
- Paraguay (56)
In our final group, we have the second-place team from the 2021 Copa America facing off against another formidable opponent ranked among the top 15 in the world. Colombia, being considered the fourth overall favorite to win this tournament, is expected to have a fierce competition, much like Group C. The group concludes with an exciting match between Brazil and Colombia. Meanwhile, Costa Rica has secured two victories in their World Cup Qualifying matches, while Paraguay has only managed to score one goal in their last four international friendly games.

Will Nunez be able to guide Uruguay to the Copa America Title Match once again?
Odds courtesy of Bovada.
Copa America 2024 Outright Winner
- Argentina (+180)
- Brazil (+225)
- Uruguay (+550)
- Colombia (+1000)
- USA (+1200)
- Ecuador (+1600)
- Mexico (+2000)
- Chile (+4000)
- Canada (+6500)
- Venezuela (+8000)
Here are the bottom six teams in terms of betting favorites for the Copa America 2024, out of the top 10 or possibly even the top 7 due to it being a 16-team tournament (Apologies, Canadiens).
- Peru 100-1
- Paraguay 125-1
- Costa Rica 200-1
- Jamaica 200-1
- Bolivia 250-1
- Panama 350-1
Like I said, it more than likely stays within the Top 10 on the odds board. What’s important to me with this smaller tournament is looking at potential knockout round matchups. Assuming Mexico and Argentina handle business in their groups, they will most likely face a team outside of the World Top 30 in the Quarterfinals. For this reason, Mexico to reach the Semifinal at (+160) is not a terrible bet in my mind. All you need is for them to handle business against team much more inferior squads.
With the same mindset applied to the other side of the bracket, the situation becomes more challenging. If we assume that the US, Uruguay, Brazil, and Colombia all secure a spot in the Top 2, the Quarterfinal and Semifinal matches could be highly thrilling. If we follow the expected outcomes, the Quarterfinals would feature Uruguay vs Colombia and Brazil vs the United States. In this scenario, all four teams hold a World Rank between 5 and 15, making it more difficult to predict the semifinalists prior to the start of the tournament.
Can Argentina successfully defend their Copa America title?
Copa America 2024 Best Bets
I wouldn’t place my bets on Brazil in the end. Despite Vini being a UCL Champion, he is burdened without Neymar and Richarlson. While Rodrygo can offer some assistance, Brazil has reached two consecutive Copa America Finals, so anything less than that would be considered a disappointing tournament.
In my opinion, Argentina seems to have the easiest path and the most talented team, making them a strong contender for any futures bet in the International Tournament. However, the odds for them are relatively low. On the other hand, Uruguay at +550 is quite attractive, but I would prefer to evaluate their Quarterfinals opponents before placing a bet. Although I may be biased, I believe that this year presents a good opportunity to bet on the United States.
The team is showcasing a splendid performance in soccer, approaching the World Top 10 rankings. Personally, I believe they have the potential to cause an upset in the Quarterfinals against Brazil or Colombia. Although facing Uruguay will be challenging in the group stage, I consider this team as a potential dark horse, especially since they are hosting the 2024 Copa America tournament.
