2024 AL & NL Cy Young Award Odds and Favorites for This Season (June 17 Update)

It seems like only yesterday that Opening Day occurred, but the 2024 MLB season is already approaching its midpoint. Within the next two weeks, several teams will reach the halfway mark of their seasons, while the MLB All-Star Game is scheduled to happen on July 16 at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. As a significant portion of the season has passed, the division and playoff races, along with the MVP, Cy Young Award, and Rookie of the Year competitions, are starting to take form.

In the previous season, Gerrit Cole, the star pitcher for the New York Yankees, achieved a significant milestone by securing his inaugural Cy Young Award. After coming in second place in both 2019 and 2022, he finally emerged as the winner of the prestigious AL honors.

Blake Snell of the San Diego Padres recently joined the elite club of pitchers who have won the Cy Young award in both the National League (NL) and the American League (AL). Snell, who previously won the AL Cy Young in 2018, showcased his incredible skills during the latter half of the season, overcoming a few initial challenges.

This season, it is highly likely that there will be a team that wins consecutively in either league. Cole has not played yet due to injury, whereas Snell, who joined the San Francisco Giants during the offseason, has had a rough start with a 0-3 record and a 9.51 ERA in six games. Currently, Snell is also unable to play due to a groin injury.

However, throughout the initial two and a half months of the MLB season, several skilled players have emerged as contenders for the AL and NL Cy Young awards.

There are a few well-known and experienced pitchers in the competition, but there are also some surprising and unfamiliar names that have emerged. The following weeks and months are bound to be full of surprises, but here are the current Cy Young odds according to BetOnline.

Who Could Be the Top 2024 Cy Young Award Candidates?

American League Cy Young Favorites

Tarik Skubal, Detroit Lions (+175)

2024 Stats for Skubal (14 starts): 8-2, 2.00 ERA, 86.0 IP, 16 BB, 98 K, 0.91 WHIP, .197 OBA, 3.6 WAR

Despite the Tigers having a losing record this season, Skubal is making significant contributions to keep them at a respectable level.

Since his return from flexor tendon surgery in July of last year, the 27-year-old southpaw has established himself as one of the top performers in his field. He has recorded an impressive record of 15 wins and 5 losses, accompanied by a stellar ERA of 2.49, an outstanding WHIP of 0.90, and an impressive tally of 200 strikeouts in 166.1 innings pitched across 29 starts.

Despite the fact that the Tigers are not among the better teams in MLB, Skubal is still a strong contender for the Cy Young award and is likely to win some hardware at the end of the season.

Corbin Burnes, Baltimore Orioles (+300)

2024 Stats for Burnes (15 starts): 8-2, 2.14 ERA, 92.2 IP, 24 BB, 89 K, 1.04 WHIP, .209 OBA, 2.2 WAR

Burnes’ departure from the troubled connection he had with the Milwaukee Brewers has contributed to his resurgence, enabling him to reclaim the same high level of performance that earned him the NL Cy Young accolades in 2021.

Although he may not be accumulating strikeouts at the same rate as he did in Milwaukee, he has demonstrated his continued ability to do so with two instances of 11-strikeout games this season.

Following Cy Young’s departure, Milwaukee struggled with maintaining consistency. However, his performance with the Orioles has been outstanding since joining the team. In his first 15 starts, he has consistently pitched at least five innings and given up three or fewer runs each time. Moreover, in ten of those starts, he has pitched at least six innings and allowed two or fewer runs.

Although there may be some obstacles along the way, maintaining a consistent performance level could potentially give him an advantage in the AL Cy Young competition, especially considering that other contenders might face more significant challenges.

Tanner Houck, Boston Red Sox (+800)

2024 Stats for Houck (14 starts): 7-5, 2.08 ERA, 91.0 IP, 15 BB, 89 K, 0.95 WHIP, .208 OBA, 3.1 WAR

If you had Houck as one of the AL Cy Young favorites in mid-June, please raise your hand.

In 2020, Houck made a remarkable entrance, achieving a perfect 3-0 record with an exceptional 0.53 ERA in three starts. However, following this initial success, he failed to reach the same level of performance. During the last season, Houck’s record stood at 6-10 with a less impressive 5.01 ERA in 21 starts.

Based on his performance this season, it seems like he has finally had a breakthrough. Houck has made 14 starts, managing to pitch at least six innings and give up three or fewer runs in 11 of those games, including his last five starts.

Houck has significantly enhanced his control. In the span of 2022 and 2023, his K/BB ratio stood at 2.46 (155 strikeouts to 63 walks). However, this season, his K/BB ratio has skyrocketed to 5.9.

Is he capable of maintaining this level of performance? Only time will tell, but if he can, it will greatly enhance Boston’s chances in the playoffs.

National League Cy Young Favorites

Ranger Suarez, Philadelphia Phillies (+350)

2024 Season Stats for Suarez (14 starts): 10-1, 1.77 ERA, 86.1 IP, 19 BB, 91 K, 0.88 WHIP, .186 OBA, 3.2 WAR

The Phillies have proven to be the strongest team in the National League, with Suarez emerging as the standout player on this exceptional team.

Although the potential has always existed, it has yet to consistently materialize since he made the transition to a full-time starter.

However, Suarez has undergone a transformation this season, following a subpar performance of 4-6 with a 4.18 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP in 22 starts last year.

Improved control, just like with Houck, is proving to be incredibly beneficial.

At the start of this season, his K/BB ratio in his career stood at a mere 2.54 (409 K/161 BB). However, he has remarkably improved this season, as his ratio now stands at 4.8. Moreover, he continues to dominate hitters, with his OBA this season being .055 lower than his career average.

Zack Wheeler, Philadelphia Phillies (+450)

2024 Season Stats for Wheeler (15 starts): 8-4, 2.84 ERA, 92 IP, 29 BB, 99 K, 1.01 WHIP, .193 OBA, 1.8 WAR

Despite being overshadowed by Suarez, Wheeler is on track to achieve an ERA below 3.00 for the fourth time out of his five seasons in Philadelphia. This remains true, even following a recent loss to the Orioles where he allowed eight runs, nine hits (including four homers), and two walks in 4.1 innings.

In the end, it is the handful of these weaker beginnings that account for Wheeler currently being behind Suarez. Wheeler’s performance on Sunday against Baltimore was a disastrous display, marking the third occasion this season where he has conceded five or more runs.

However, whenever Wheeler has been in the game, he has displayed an almost impenetrable performance consistently. Out of his eight starts, he has conceded less than two runs. Moreover, in four of those starts, he has managed to pitch for seven innings or more without allowing any runs or only permitting a single run.

If he can replicate more of those exceptional starts and minimize the performances like the one he had against the Orioles, he will remain a strong contender for the NL Cy Young award throughout the season.

Shota Imanaga, Chicago Cubs (+650)

2024 Season Stats for Imanaga (13 starts): 7-1, 1.89 ERA, 11 BB, 78 K, 0.99 WHIP, .221 OBA, 2.6 WAR

Imanaga wasted no time getting up to speed following his transition from Japan. During his time with the Yokohama BayStars, he impressively maintained an ERA below 3.00 in six out of eight seasons.

In his initial nine starts, he managed to limit the opposition to two or less earned runs each time, until he displayed signs of vulnerability against the Milwaukee Brewers on May 29th (4.1 IP, 8 H, 7 H, 7 R). However, he swiftly rebounded and has since conceded merely four earned runs across 18 innings in his first three starts of June.
