Wings vs Mercury Prediction & Picks (5/25): A Fantastic Four for Phoenix?

Closing out today’s WNBA schedule, the Phoenix Mercury (3-1) will be hosting the Dallas Wings (1-2) at the Footprint Center in Phoenix. The matchup is set to tip off at 10:00 pm ET/7:00 pm local time and both teams will be missing key players.

Considering Brittney Griner’s absence due to a fractured toe, the Mercury’s prospects appeared grim, particularly considering their poor performance and the WNBA’s lowest record from the previous season.

However, following their impressive performance in the season-opening defeat against the Las Vegas Aces, the Mercury have managed to secure three consecutive victories. Among those triumphs was a notable 98-88 win at Michelob Ultra Arena in their rematch against the Aces on Tuesday.

Despite the Mercury’s great performance, the Wings are currently facing difficulties due to Satou Sabally’s absence. Sabally, who underwent offseason shoulder surgery, might not return until after the Olympic break. Her absence is greatly felt at the moment.

After securing a victory in their season opener against the Chicago Sky at home, they were unable to replicate the success in the subsequent rematch just three days later. Their most recent game resulted in a defeat with a score of 83-78 against Atlanta on Tuesday.

Given that it is still early in the season, the current positions of some teams may not accurately reflect their eventual standings. However, the Wings would not have anticipated a 1-3 start at this stage. Consequently, tonight’s game in Phoenix holds significant importance for them.

Dallas Wings vs Phoenix Mercury Betting Analysis

While it’s undeniable that Griner’s presence is irreplaceable, the Mercury have impressively managed to step up and successfully fill the void both offensively and defensively.

In the previous season, Griner (6.3 RPG) and Briana Turner (6.3 RPG) were the sole Mercury players who maintained an average of four or more rebounds per game. However, in the current season, the situation has changed significantly. After four games, a total of five Phoenix players have achieved a minimum of 4.8 RPG, with Natasha Mack leading the team with an impressive 8.3 RPG.

The offensive impact of Kahleah Copper appears to be the most outstanding acquisition of the offseason. Throughout her final season with the Chicago Sky, the 2021 WNBA Finals MVP showcased remarkable performance, averaging a career-high 18.7 PPG and achieving a career-best 40.4% three-point shooting.

Although her current performance may slightly decrease, she is well on track to surpassing those numbers by a significant margin. In her recent game against the Atlanta Dream, she scored an impressive 38 points, and followed it up with another 37 points in Tuesday’s victory against the Aces. Currently, she maintains an average of 28.5 points per game, with an outstanding shooting percentage of 50.6% from the field, 46.7% from three-point range, and 87.0% from the free-throw line.

Furthermore, Diana Taurasi, who seems to defy the passage of time, continues to excel and make a significant contribution to the Phoenix team. In the season opener against the Aces, she scored 23 points, and in Thursday’s intense 83-80 victory against the Washington Mystics, she added another 20 points to her impressive tally.

Despite the Mercury having plenty of reasons to be optimistic at the moment, the Wings are currently experiencing difficulties in finding their momentum.

Dallas is heavily dependent on Arike Ogunbowale to not only score consistently but also shoot accurately without Sabally. Although she has scored impressively with 25, 35, and 24 points in three games, her shooting percentages of 38.0% from the field and 32.1% from three are less than ideal. This is further highlighted by her average of 23.7 field goal attempts and 9.3 three-point attempts per game.

Despite the possibility of having better luck tonight against a Mercury team that ranks ninth in three-point defense in the WNBA, it remains doubtful whether it will be sufficient to avoid a third consecutive defeat.

Dallas Wings vs Phoenix Mercury Prediction & Picks

Wings vs Mercury Prediction: Mercury to win

Wings vs Mercury Picks: 1) Mercury -4, 2) Arike Ogunbowale over 3.5 made threes (+155 at Bovada), 3) Arike Ogunbowale over 24.5 points (-125 at Bovada), 4) Kahleah Copper over 2.5 made threes (+105 at Bovada)

Based on today’s WNBA player props analysis, it is highly recommended to choose the over option for Copper’s made threes prop. This is currently one of the most advantageous decisions you can make. While it remains to be seen how long this early success will last, it is advisable to keep taking this option until either the performance declines or the odds are modified.
