Although Max Verstappen seems to be on track for another Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championship title, the 2024 F1 season has been far from uneventful. Can we expect more excitement in today’s British Grand Prix at Silverstone?
Late in last week’s Austrian Grand Prix, Verstappen and close friend/closest championship rival Lando Norris were engaged in a fierce battle for the lead. With eight laps remaining, the two made contact which ended Norris’s race, knocked Verstappen out of contention for the win, and opened the door for George Russell to swoop in and snatch his second career Formula 1 win.
Verstappen was deemed responsible for the collision and was penalized with a ten-second penalty. However, despite the controversy, his friendship with Norris remained unharmed, as they swiftly mended their differences.
Furthermore, not only did he manage to secure a larger championship lead, but his remarkable fifth-place finish granted him an additional ten points, widening the gap between him and Norris by a staggering 81 points. Unfortunately, Norris ended up finishing at the bottom of the race, leaving him with no points to take home.
2024 Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championship Standings (Through 11 Races)
- Max Verstappen (Red Bull) – 237
- Lando Norris (McLaren) – 156
- Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) – 150
- Carlos Sainz Jr. (Ferrari) – 135
- Sergio Perez (Red Bull) – 118
- Oscar Piastri (McLaren) – 112
- George Russell (Mercedes) – 111
- Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) – 85
Verstappen emerged victorious for the very first time last year at the British Grand Prix, making the U.K. the focal point of this week’s racing action.
Norris and Hamilton, who boasts an impressive record of eight British Grand Prix wins, three more than Jim Clark and Alain Prost, were also present on the podium at Silverstone.
It is highly likely that we will witness substantial British presence on the podium this year too. Russell secured pole position for the second time this season, surpassing both Hamilton and Norris. Verstappen will accompany Norris on the second row after narrowly defeating Piastri to secure fourth place.
Despite missing out on his ninth pole in 2024, Verstappen is still the British Grand Prix favorite. Odds at BetOnline put him just ahead of Norris, who is followed by the Mercedes men, who are looking for another positive weekend.

British Grand Prix Predictions & Picks
Verstappen’s fourth-place starting position and Norris’ presence offer a rare opportunity to support them at unusual odds.
However, should you invest in him or should you place your Formula 1 bets in another direction?
There is definitely a strong case for putting in a few dollars on Verstappen to win.
Despite his continued dominance this season, it is evident that he has not reached the same level as last season, at least not yet. Beating the British contingent ahead of him might require some effort, if he can even accomplish it. In recent races, Norris has emerged as Verstappen’s strongest competitor. Additionally, Mercedes seems to be on the rise, as they were already on track for a successful week even before Russell’s fortunate turn of events.
Is it possible for Hamilton to secure his initial victory after the 2021 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix?
Since the race that shall not be mentioned, Hamilton has been chasing an elusive 104th career Formula 1 win. After finishing second five times in 2022 and three times in 2023, he has yet to finish better than third this season.
Although he is favored to finish within the top two with +150 odds, a more favorable bet would be to support him for a top-three finish with -140 odds. It is worth noting that Hamilton has consistently secured a place within the top three in the British Grand Prix since his fourth-place finish in 2013. This is particularly significant considering the difficulties both Hamilton and Mercedes have faced following a certain race.
An 11th straight British Grand Prix podium for Hamilton should be part of a double top-three day for Mercedes (+110 odds for that result).
Also worth a look at plus odds is a top-ten finish for Sergio Perez (+100). Perez will start 19th after spinning out in Q1, the latest frustration in a stretch of frustrations. But in 27 races since last year’s Monaco Grand Prix, Perez has finished at least tenth in all 23 races that he has completed.
