Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix Predictions & Picks: Can Russell Hold Off Verstappen in Montreal?

The 2024 Formula 1 season has witnessed greater parity in its first eight races compared to the previous season, despite Max Verstappen’s near-certain victory in yet another world championship. Will this trend of parity persist during today’s Canadian Grand Prix?

Charles Leclerc put an end to Max Verstappen’s impressive streak of nine consecutive pole positions at the Monaco Grand Prix two weeks ago. Not only did Leclerc claim the top spot in qualifying, but he also secured victory in his home race, finally breaking a series of unfortunate outcomes at both Monaco and as a polesitter.

Verstappen, who began and concluded the race in sixth place, currently holds a 31-point lead over Leclerc in the Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championship rankings. He has emerged victorious in five races so far this season. However, thanks to Leclerc’s exceptional performance at Monaco, the number of drivers who have secured a race win this season has surpassed the previous year’s count. In fact, four drivers (Verstappen, Leclerc, Lando Norris, and Carlos Sainz Jr.) have already clinched a victory, compared to last season’s three winners (Verstappen, Sainz, and Sergio Perez), despite having 14 fewer races.

Is it likely that the number will go up today? Verstappen, for the second consecutive race, will not be starting in the top position. George Russell, on the other hand, secured his second Formula 1 pole of his career by outperforming Verstappen. Remarkably, both drivers finished with identical times, but since Russell set his time (1:12.000) earlier, he was awarded the pole position.

However, despite being unable to start a new pole streak, Verstappen remains the frontrunner to win the Canadian Grand Prix, according to the latest odds.

Canadian Grand Prix Predictions & Picks

For those interested in Formula 1 betting, the presence of Verstappen not starting on pole provides the greatest betting value and betting options.

Although Monaco does not offer many opportunities to fully capitalize on this, due to the challenges of overtaking on the track, today could be an exceptional betting day for Formula 1 enthusiasts looking for excitement.

While Russell may have secured the pole position, the chances of him and Mercedes clinching their first victory since the 2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix are slim. On the other hand, Verstappen’s situation at Monaco was disadvantageous, but that is not the case for the current race. Hence, there may not be a more opportune moment this season to bet on Verstappen as the race winner.

Despite potentially not being able to secure his second career win, Russell’s performance showcases a positive aspect for the Briton. The Silver Arrows have been overshadowed by Red Bull, McLaren, and Ferrari in terms of pace, but Russell’s effort highlights the presence of potential to build upon.

Lando Norris, who will start third, and has four podiums in his last six races, has better odds to finish second, coming in at -120 to Russell’s +120. There’s value with either, but I’m taking the optimistic view on Russell.

Lastly, this isn’t a high-value play, but Formula 1’s Canadian competitor should have one of his better days of the season. Lance Stroll has finished in the top ten in four of five career starts in his home race, and he is -180 to make it five of six today. Stroll will start ninth, three spots behind Aston Martin teammate Fernando Alonso.
