2024 French Open Men’s Singles Odds & Favorites: Don’t Look Beyond the Big Names

Despite the uncooperative weather, both the French Open men’s and women’s singles tournaments have reached the third round, narrowing down to 32 players. The upcoming matches for this round are scheduled to occur today and tomorrow.

Out of the 32 seeded players in men’s singles, a total of 21 players have managed to survive until this stage. This impressive statistic includes every single one of the top 15 seeds. However, as we progress to the third round, six matches are scheduled between seeded players, which means that from today onwards, we will witness the departure of some of the renowned players from the tournament.

Currently, Novak Djokovic, Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, and Daniil Medvedev continue to perform exceptionally well in their respective matches. Today, Sinner will face Pavel Kotov and Alcaraz will compete against #27 Seb Korda. On the other hand, Djokovic is set to play against #30 Lorenzo Musetti, and Medvedev will face Tomas Machac tomorrow.

Out of the remaining competitors, Korda is among the four Americans who have managed to secure a seeding. The other three are Taylor Fritz, holding the twelfth seed, Tommy Paul with the fourteenth seed, and Ben Shelton, positioned as the fifteenth seed. Unfortunately, Frances Tiafoe, who was seeded twenty-fifth, was defeated yesterday by Denis Shapovalov. Shapovalov, who suffered a knee injury last year resulting in a prolonged absence from the game, is determined to climb up the rankings once again.

Since Andy Roddick’s 2003 US Open win, there hasn’t been an American male player who has clinched a Grand Slam singles title. Is there a possibility of a change in this tournament? It seems highly improbable, particularly since the renowned top-seeded players are expected to dominate and claim the trophy.

Prior to delving into the French Open men’s singles favorites, let’s first take a look at the tournament’s odds to determine the potential winners.

2024 French Open Men’s Singles Favorites

Carlos Alcaraz (+240)

During the clay swing in April and May, Alcaraz’s preparation for the French Open was hindered by a right forearm injury. This injury restricted him to just one tournament, the Madrid Open, where he unfortunately lost in the quarterfinals despite being the defending champion for the past two years.

However, it appears that the injury is no longer impacting him, evident from his successful start in the tournament with a straight-sets victory against American JJ Wolf and a four-set win against qualifier Jesper de Jong. Although De Jong provided more resistance than anticipated, this could potentially benefit him by enhancing his concentration and skills for the tougher opponents he will face in the future.

Jannik Sinner (+375)

Sinner has arguably been the best player in the world since his upset by Daniel Altmaier in the second round of last year’s French Open.

Similar to Alcaraz, his preparation for the French Open was restricted. Following his advancement to the quarterfinals of the Madrid Masters, he had to pull out of his planned match against Felix Auger-Aliassime due to a hip injury. Subsequently, he refrained from playing until his encounter with Christopher Eubanks in the initial round of the French Open, where he emerged victorious.

Based on his straight-sets victories over Eubanks and Richard Gasquet, it appears that he is ready to compete. However, it is important to note that in his previous encounter with Kotov, he worsened his hip injury, which affected his preparation for Roland Garros.

Should the hip issue remain calm, the upcoming days could hold great significance for the Italian.

After triumphing at the Australian Open and winning both Grand Slam tournaments in 2024, Sinner has the potential to secure the coveted world number one ranking in the upcoming week. Even if Djokovic claims the title, Sinner will ascend to the top spot if he reaches the final.

Novak Djokovic (+400)

While Alcaraz and Sinner are favored by the odds, it is important to acknowledge that Djokovic, the reigning champion of the French Open men’s singles, should be regarded as the top contender until proven otherwise.

Is it possible for that to occur? It can be confidently stated that he will not relinquish his title or his number one ranking without putting up a fight.
