MLB All Star Game, American League vs National League: Odds and Prediction

It may be hard to believe, but we’ve already arrived at the MLB All Star Game, famously known as the Midsummer’s Classic. The celebration began last night with Teoscar Hernandez, a first-time participant at Globe Life Field, triumphing in the 2024 Home Run Derby. Tonight, the highly anticipated game between the two leagues takes place, promising an evening filled with renowned stars.

How about discussing the starting lineups and reserves, and exploring potential betting opportunities?

MLB All Star Game Starting Lineups

Tonight, the MLB All Star Game of 2024 will take place in Arlington, Texas.

Starting Pitchers

  • In the National League, Paul Skenes has an impressive record of 6 wins and 0 losses, accompanied by an outstanding ERA of 1.90 and a WHIP of 0.92.
  • In the American League, Corbin Burnes has an impressive record of 9 wins and 4 losses, with a stellar ERA of 2.43 and a WHIP of 1.04.

Two right-handed pitchers, both considered outstanding, are chosen to start the game for each team. The official selection is rookie Paul Skenes. One would expect such high-caliber pitchers to dominate, but they will be up against the most skilled hitters in the league. Here are the batting orders and starting lineups for both teams.

National League Starters

Fan favorites dominate the starting lineup of the National League All Star team.

On Tuesday Night, the National League’s starting lineup consists of three players from the Phillies, two from the Brewers, and four from the NL West. The Dodgers proudly contribute two starters, Shohei Ohtani and Teoscar Hernandez, who is the Home Run Derby Champion. Now, let’s take a look at the lineup of the American League!

American League Starters

After a streak of victories since 2012, the American League was finally defeated in last year’s All Star Game.

After a streak of nine consecutive victories in the All Star Games, the AL is seeking revenge following their defeat last season. It’s worth noting that the game no longer holds the power to decide home field advantage in the World Series, as this rule was abolished in 2016. Nevertheless, the American League remains determined to avenge their loss. Now, let’s take a look at the reserves for both teams!

MLB All Star Game Reserves

Tonight marks Freddie Freeman’s eighth time gracing the All Star stage.

National League Reserves

  • Will Smith
  • CJ Abrams
  • Pete Alonso
  • Luis Arraez
  • Mookie Betts
  • Elly De La Cruz
  • Freddie Freeman
  • Ryan McMahon
  • Jackson Merrill
  • Heliot Ramos
  • Bryan Reynolds
  • Marcell Ozuna

American League Reserves

  • Salvador Perez
  • Josh Naylor
  • Isaac Paredes
  • Willi Castro
  • Corey Seager
  • Jordan Westburg
  • Bobby Witt Jr.
  • Jaren Duran
  • Riley Greene
  • Anthony Santander
  • David Fry

No matter the outcome, it is certain to be a star-studded night. However, can we identify the most promising choices?

This year marks the debut All Star appearance for Bobby Witt Jr.

2024 MLB All Star Game Betting Odds

  • National League +1.5 (-207)
  • American League -1.5 (+177)

Money Line

  • National League +106
  • American League -116

  • Over 7.5 (+109)
  • Under 7.5 (-129)

MVP

  • Aaron Judge +850

  • Juan Soto +900
  • Gunnar Henderson +1000
  • Bryce Harper +1000
  • Field +1000

  • Bobby Witt Jr. +1200
  • Trea Turner +1400
  • Paul Skenes +1600
  • Adley Rutschman +1800
  • Yordan Alvarez +1800

It is evident that there are numerous names not included in this list, with odds of 20-1 or lower. However, predicting the MVP for the All Star game seems like a random guess. The MVP can be determined by a single swing of the bat, especially with the talented pitchers in this game. Although I am inclined to bet on the under 7.5 and don’t mind paying the extra cost, it is difficult to confidently choose among the batters in these lineups.

The previous four All Star Games have all finished with a total score below 7.5, and out of the last seven games, six have also remained below that threshold. However, it’s worth noting that recent games have taken place in stadiums that are more favorable for pitchers, except for the 2021 game at Coors Field. With that said, I believe this trend will continue, but I find it difficult to actively hope for fewer runs in the All Star Game.

Take into consideration that since 2000, the MVP award has been won by pitchers on only two occasions: Mariano Rivera in 2013 and Shane Bieber in 2019.

2024 MLB All Star Game Best Bets

Tonight, Adley Rutschman will be taking the field as the starting player for the American League in the All Star Game.

I must confess that there isn’t much room for handicapping in an All Star Game. It’s impossible to predict the number of innings the starters will play, the number of at bats each player will have, or the matchups on the mound. Therefore, I will not be making any bets on props or the MVP market. Although I previously mentioned my inclination towards the under 7.5, even with the higher odds, I will instead place a wager on the American League, expecting them to seek revenge.

Best Bets: American League ML (-116) BetOnline

The all-time series between the AL and NL stands at 47-44-2 in favor of the AL. Despite winning nine consecutive games, the AL suffered a loss last year due to a late home run by the National League. This defeat is likely to fuel their motivation tonight. However, looking at the NL’s track record, they have only managed to win four times since 1997, which does not bode well for them. In my opinion, it’s difficult to predict the outcome of this game, but can we really expect the rookie to dominate in an All-Star Game start?

Me neither. Gimme the AL.
