MLB All Star Game, American League vs National League: Odds and Prediction

It may be hard to believe, but we have already arrived at the MLB All Star Game, also known as the Midsummer’s Classic. The exciting events began yesterday with Teoscar Hernandez, a first-time participant at Globe Life Field, winning the 2024 Home Run Derby. Tonight, we can look forward to an incredible evening as the two leagues compete in the highly anticipated game, filled with renowned stars.

How about discussing the starting lineups and reserves to identify a potential betting opportunity?

MLB All Star Game Starting Lineups

Tonight in Arlington, Texas, the 2024 MLB All Star Game will take place.

Starting Pitchers

  • In the National League, Paul Skenes boasts an impressive record of 6 wins and 0 losses, accompanied by a remarkable ERA of 1.90 and a WHIP of 0.92.
  • In the American League, Corbin Burnes boasts an impressive record of 9 wins and 4 losses, accompanied by a stellar 2.43 ERA and a commendable 1.04 WHIP.

Two right-handed pitchers, both considered to be skilled, begin the game as starters for each team. The rookie Paul Skenes is given the official opportunity to start. One would expect these two talented pitchers to perform exceptionally well, but they are up against the most elite hitters in the league. Below are the lineups and batting orders for both teams.

National League Starters

Fan favorites fill the starting lineup for the National League All Star team.

On Tuesday Night, the National League’s starting lineup consists of three Phillies, two Brewers, and four players from the NL West. Notably, the Dodgers contribute two starters, Shohei Ohtani and Teoscar Hernandez, the reigning Home Run Derby Champion. Now, let’s take a look at the lineup of the American League!

American League Starters

After a winning streak since 2012, the American League experienced their first loss in the All Star Game last year.

After winning nine consecutive All Star Games before last season, the AL is seeking revenge. Although the game no longer holds the power to decide home field advantage in the World Series, a rule that was abolished in 2016, the American League is determined to make a strong comeback. Below are the reserves for both teams!

MLB All Star Game Reserves

Tonight, Freddie Freeman will be showcasing his talent at the All Star game for the 8th time.

  • Will Smith
  • CJ Abrams
  • Pete Alonso
  • Luis Arraez
  • Mookie Betts
  • Elly De La Cruz

American League Reserves

Regardless of the outcome, it is guaranteed to be a star-studded night. However, can we identify the most promising choices?

This year marks Bobby Witt Jr.’s inaugural appearance at the All Star game.

Although there are many players not mentioned in this list who have odds of 20-1 or lower, predicting the MVP for the All Star game feels like a shot in the dark. With the level of talent among the pitchers, one swing of the bat could easily determine the game’s MVP. While I personally believe the total runs scored will be less than 7.5 and don’t mind accepting the higher odds, it’s still a difficult decision considering the strong lineups of batters involved.

In the past four All Star Games, all of them have ended with a total score of less than 7.5. Additionally, out of the last seven games, six of them have also stayed below that number. It could be argued that this trend is due to the games being played in “pitcher friendly” stadiums, with the exception of Coors Field in 2021. With that said, I believe that this game will also have a low score, although I find it difficult to root against runs in the All Star Game.

When considering the MVP betting options, it’s important to note that only two pitchers, Mariano Rivera in 2013 and Shane Bieber in 2019, have emerged as winners since 2000.

2024 MLB All Star Game Best Bets

Tonight at the All-Star Game, Adley Rutschman will be representing the American League as a starter.

I must acknowledge that there isn’t a lot of room for handicapping in an All Star Game. The game is unpredictable, with unknown factors such as the number of innings the starters will pitch, the number of at-bats each player will have, and the pitching matchups. Therefore, I will avoid making any predictions on props or the MVP market. Although I previously mentioned my inclination towards the under 7.5, I will instead place a bet on the American League as they seek revenge.

Best Bets: American League ML (-116) BetOnline

The all-time series between the AL and NL stands at 47-44-2 in favor of the AL. Despite losing last year due to a late home run, the AL had a nine-game winning streak before that and should be highly motivated tonight. On the other hand, the NL has only managed to win four times since 1997, which reflects poorly on their recent performance. Personally, I see this game as quite unpredictable, but do we seriously believe that the rookie will be allowed to dominate in an All-Star Game start?

Me neither. Gimme the AL.
