The 2023-24 NHL postseason has come to an end following Monday night’s game. Despite coming close to experiencing one of the greatest collapses in league history, the Florida Panthers have emerged as the champions of the Stanley Cup after a thrilling seven-game series against the Edmonton Oilers.

As the Panthers focus on mapping out the parade route, NHL bettors are already shifting their attention to the upcoming season. Online sportsbooks such as BetOnline have already opened NHL futures markets, allowing bettors to explore and speculate about the champions for the next year.

Considering this, we will now examine the initial 2025 NHL Stanley Cup odds following a recap of the most recent championship series.

2024 Stanley Cup Final: Oilers vs. Panthers Series Recap

Both teams that made it to this year’s Stanley Cup Final faced a challenging journey to reach the ultimate stage of the championship.

The Oilers swiftly defeated the Los Angeles Kings in five games, followed by an intense seven-game battle against their rivals, the Vancouver Canucks. Edmonton emerged victorious by winning three of the last four games in the series. They then proceeded to triumph over the Dallas Stars in six games during the Western Conference Finals. This victory marked the Oilers’ first appearance in the Stanley Cup Final since 2006.

In the meantime, the Panthers exhibited a decent level of consistency while playing away games, as they only suffered consecutive losses once during the initial three rounds. They managed to defeat the Tampa Bay Lightning in five games and proceeded to triumph over both the Boston Bruins and New York Rangers in six games each. This playoff journey also marked Florida’s second consecutive appearance in the Stanley Cup.

In the beginning, the Panthers’ expertise seemed to be yielding positive results. Florida commenced the Stanley Cup Final with three consecutive triumphs, displaying dominance over the Oilers. With a remarkable 11-4 goal difference in those matches, the Panthers appeared to be on track for a clean sweep.

However, this was the turning point for Edmonton. They managed to reduce the Panthers’ series lead to two games after a dominating 8-1 victory in Game 4, followed by a solid 5-3 win in Game 5. The momentum was back on their side as they returned to Rogers Place for Game 6, where Connor McDavid and his teammates secured a convincing 5-1 victory, setting the stage for a thrilling sudden-death finale to determine the champion.

The Oilers’ comeback effort was all for naught, though, as the Panthers avoided disaster with a 2-1 Cup-clinching effort in Game 7. Sam Reinhart and Carter Verhaeghe each scored while Sergei Bobrovsky turned aside 23 of the 24 shots he faced. Despite his team losing, McDavid was named the Conn Smythe Trophy recipient after amassing 11 points in the Stanley Cup Final.

Ultimately, it is evident that the Panthers’ inaugural Stanley Cup triumph was made possible by the valuable lessons learned from the previous year’s journey.

Following their victory in the 2023-24 season, the Panthers are the leading contenders according to BetOnline with odds of +650 to defend their Stanley Cup Championship title. It is worth noting that since the year 2000, only two teams, the 2016/17 Pittsburgh Penguins and the 2020/21 Tampa Bay Lightning, have managed to win consecutive championships. Additionally, the Lightning hold the distinction of being the most recent team to reach the finals three years in a row, achieving this feat from 2020 to 2022.

Following their disappointing performance in Sunrise, the Oilers now possess the second-highest odds (+700) to win the 2025 Stanley Cup. It is worth noting that this year’s appearance in the championship round was Edmonton’s first in almost two decades. Only time will reveal if McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and the rest of the team can prevent Oilers fans from enduring such a lengthy wait in the future.

The Dallas Stars (+900) and New York Rangers (+1100) finished as runners-up in this year’s conference finals. They currently hold the third and fourth-best odds to win the Stanley Cup, respectively. It is worth noting that both teams have not won a championship since the 1990s. However, they are expected to remain strong contenders in the NHL for the foreseeable future.

Despite finishing third in the regular season with 111 points, the Carolina Hurricanes find themselves in the No. 5 spot at +1200. Although they have made it to the Eastern Conference Finals twice in the past six NHL postseasons, the Hurricanes have not advanced to the Stanley Cup round since their victorious season in 2006.

The 2024-25 NHL season appears to be a highly competitive campaign, as there are 14 teams with odds of +2800 or lower.
