Open Championship 2024 Odds and Favorites: Who Are the Top British Open Contenders?

In each of the last two years, the Open Championship, also known as the British Open, has been won by a first-time major winner. Will that be the case this week at Royal Troon Golf Club, the site of the 152^nd edition of golf’s oldest major?

Last year at Royal Liverpool, Brian Harman surged ahead of the competition on Friday and went on to secure a commanding victory, finishing a remarkable six strokes ahead. This triumph not only marked his first major title but also ended his six-year winning drought in an exceptional and dominant manner.

Cameron Smith triumphed in his first major title at St. Andrews, surmounting a four-shot deficit from the previous year. In his final round, he kicked off the back nine with an impressive streak of five consecutive birdies, ultimately securing victory with a score of 64.

While Smith sizzled in 2022, third-round co-leader Rory McIlroy fizzled. He shot a bogey-free 70, but his second and final birdie was on the 10^th hole.

That was a heartbreaking result for McIlroy, but it wasn’t nearly as heartbreaking as his sad stretch at last month’s U.S. Open. He went to the 15^th hole at Pinehurst at 8-under and in command, but he bogeyed three of his final four holes and finished a stroke behind tournament winner Bryson DeChambeau.

After taking a few weeks off, McIlroy returned to action last week at the Genesis Scottish Open, where he tied for fourth, four strokes behind Robert MacIntyre.

It wasn’t a winning return, but it was a positive return for the four-time major winner. Will a long-awaited fifth title finally stop eluding him this week? He and Scottie Scheffler are the only two players in the Open Championship field with odds shorter than +1000 at BetOnline.

Who Are the Favorites to Win the Open Championship?

Scottie Scheffler (+600)

Although Scheffler has not been a strong contender in the Open Championship in the past, he is the clear favorite to win this week, and rightfully so.

When he was last on the course for a competitive round, he defeated Tom Kim in a playoff to win the Travelers Championship, his sixth win of the season.

Since Brooks Koepka’s victory in the U.S. Open and PGA Championship in 2018, no golfer has achieved the feat of winning more than one major in a single season. However, if there is anyone capable of accomplishing this, it is undoubtedly the current reigning champion.

Scheffler’s relative rust compared to other contenders is his only drawback. However, his recent track record of six wins in his last ten tournaments sets him apart from the rest of the field.

Rory McIlroy (+800)

During the previous Open Championship at Royal Troon, McIlroy secured a tied fifth position, trailing 16 strokes behind Henrik Stenson. Stenson set a remarkable record for major championships, concluding with a score of 264 (-20).

That experience gives him an advantage over many of his fellow Open Championship contenders, but will he contend this week? He has been searching for a fifth major title since winning the 2014 PGA Championship, and his runner-up finish at Pinehurst was his fourth such finish since that victory.

The 2014 PGA Championship took place at Valhalla in Louisville, Kentucky. This year’s PGA Championship also happened at the same location. Although the similarities between then and now end there, it would be fitting if he were to end his major drought this week.

Xander Schauffele (+1400)

Schauffele will soon strive to retain his Olympic championship at Le Golf National in France. However, prior to his pursuit of gold, he must focus on clinching his second major victory of the year.

Despite dropping to #3 in the world rankings, Schauffele remains the second-best player on the PGA Tour this season, trailing only Scheffler and McIlroy.

Only once has he finished outside of the top 25, and since finishing tied for 25^th at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, his worst finish in ten individual tournaments—he and Patrick Cantlay finished tied for 23^rd at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, a team event—is a tie for 18^th at the RBC Heritage in April.

Schauffele’s standout season includes top-ten finishes in all three majors. Along with his win at the PGA Championship, he finished eighth at the Masters and tied for seventh in the U.S. Open.

Ludvig Aberg (+1800)

Despite holding the lead going into the final round of the Genesis Scottish Open, Aberg’s performance took a downturn. After impressive scores of 64, 64, and 65 in the previous rounds, he unfortunately encountered three bogeys in the last eight holes. Consequently, he concluded Sunday’s play with a score of 3-over 73, placing him in a tie for fourth position, four strokes behind MacIntyre.

It still amounts to a positive week for Aberg, who finished in the top five for the fourth time this season. That includes a runner-up finish to Scheffler at the Masters, while he missed the cut at the PGA Championship and tied for 12^th at the U.S. Open.

Aberg appears to be on the verge of winning a major championship, and it feels inevitable. However, the recent challenges he faced on Sunday during the Scottish Open might serve as an added incentive for him to overcome the obstacles and emerge victorious at Royal Troon this week.

Collin Morikawa (+1800)

Scheffler stands out as the leading performer on the PGA Tour this season, while Schauffele’s notable major victory and impressive tally of 11 top-ten finishes place him as the top contender among the remaining players.

However, very few golfers have demonstrated the same level of skill and performance as Morikawa, who has had an exceptional streak over the past three months. During this time, he has achieved top-four finishes on five occasions, which notably include a third-place tie at the Masters and a fourth-place tie at the PGA Championship.

Since his victory at the 2021 Open Championship at Royal St. George’s, he has been unable to secure a win in this period.

It looked like his drought might come to an end on Sunday at the Renaissance Club, but after shooting a 3-under 32 on the front nine to move to -16, he went birdie-less on the back nine that featured two par-5s, and a double-bogey six on the 11^th proved to the beginning of the end for his hopes to win.

Despite not making the most of a great opportunity to secure a win on Sunday, he managed to finish tied for fourth place alongside Aberg, McIlroy, and three other players. This marked another positive week for the two-time major champion. Similar to Aberg, Morikawa may find additional motivation from this experience.

Schauffele ended a lengthy winless streak in May by securing victory at the PGA Championship. Will Morikawa be able to accomplish a comparable achievement at Royal Troon? Given his exceptional performance in recent months, it is highly anticipated that he will be a strong contender on Sunday.
