After the 2024 PGA Tour season’s last signature event, we will witness a hiatus for many of the tour’s top talents until they travel to Scotland’s Royal Troon to prepare for the upcoming Open Championship next month. Nonetheless, even though Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, or Xander Schauffele won’t be present at this week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic, a strong field of players will compete for the $9.2 million prize money at Detroit Golf Club.
After a rough week at the U.S. Open, Scheffler unsurprisingly bounced back last week by defeating Tom Kim in a playoff to win the Travelers Championship. It was Scheffler’s fourth signature event win of the season and his sixth overall. The world number one now has $27,696,858 in prize money this season, more than $5 million more the two men behind him, Xander Schauffele ($12,636,360) and Rory McIlroy ($10,034,665) have won combined.
Chris Kirk, currently ranked tenth on the money list with earnings of $5,277,152, holds the top spot among participants in the Rocket Mortgage Classic. This impressive figure is largely attributed to his victory in the season-opening signature event in Hawaii, where he claimed a substantial prize of $3.6 million.
Despite his victory at the Sentry Tournament of Champions, Kirk has struggled to achieve success with just one top-ten finish since then. Consequently, he could greatly benefit from a productive week in Detroit. However, he is not considered one of the favorites for the Rocket Mortgage Classic.
Kim, who held the lead in each of the first three rounds at TPC River Highlands, is the favorite to win the tournament. Despite birdying his last hole on Sunday, he was unable to secure his first victory of the year, resulting in a playoff loss to Scheffler.

Who Are the Favorites to Win the Rocket Mortgage Classic?
While odds certainly play a role in considering my favorites for a tournament, I place significant importance on a golfer’s current form and their previous performance on the course or in similar tournaments.
Here are the top six golfers who, in my opinion, have the greatest chance of winning the trophy and receiving a prize money of $1.65 million by the end of Sunday.
Tom Kim (+1400)
Kim, who had an impressive track record last season with two wins and top ten finishes in both the U.S. Open (tied for eighth) and The Open Championship (tied for second), has struggled to find success in the current season.
However, his encounter with the beast last week was incredibly close to victory, filling him with immense confidence for the upcoming tournament. This newfound belief suggests that he is capable of achieving a prolonged period of triumphs.
Cameron Young (+1400)
Young’s 11-under 59 on Saturday was one of the highlights of the Travelers Championship, and it helped him record his first top-ten finish since tying for ninth at the Masters in April.
Young, in his only prior participation in the Rocket Mortgage Classic, secured a commendable second-place tie in 2022, finishing just five strokes shy of Tony Finau, the victorious player of the tournament.
Akshay Bhatia (+2000)
Bhatia, who won the Valero Texas Open earlier this year, tied for fifth last week. That strong showing in Connecticut came a week after he posted the best major finish of his young career, a tie for 16th at the U.S. Open.
Taylor Pendrith (+2800)
In his two previous Rocket Mortgage Classic appearances, Pendrith finished tied for 14th last year and tied for second in 2022. In 2022, he went into the final round tied for the lead, but an even-par 72 saw him finish five strokes behind 54-hole co-leader and eventual winner Finau, who shot a five-under 67.
The Canadian enters this year’s tournament in a satisfactory state, with a track record of finishing in the top 25 in six out of his last nine tournaments, which includes a recent victory at the Byron Nelson in the previous month. However, in the initial nine tournaments of this season, he experienced six instances of failing to make the cut.
Stephan Jaeger (+3300)
Jaeger’s most notable achievements this season occurred prior to April, when he emerged victorious at the Texas Children’s Houston Open by defeating Scheffler, Finau, and other competitors with a single stroke. Additionally, he secured a commendable third-place finish at both the Farmers Insurance Open and Mexico Open.
Since his win in Houston, Jaeger’s best finish in eight tournaments is a tie for 18th at the RBC Heritage in April. But he tied for ninth in last year’s Rocket Mortgage Classic and fifth in 2022, so look out for the 35-year-old German this week.
Taylor Moore (+5500)
Since finishing tied for 12th at the PGA Championship, Moore has three missed cuts (Charles Schwab Challenge, Memorial, and U.S. Open) and a tie for 68th (Travelers Championship) in four tournaments.
While his current form may not be particularly encouraging, his previous performances in this tournament prove otherwise. Last year, he impressively tied for fourth place, coming in just three strokes behind the playoff participants Rickie Fowler, Adam Hadwin, and Collin Morikawa. Additionally, the year before, he secured a solid sixth-place finish all on his own.
Rocket Mortgage Classic Predictions & Picks
Rocket Mortgage Classic Winner Prediction & Pick: Tom Kim (+1400)
Choosing a favorite isn’t necessarily the best approach, even in situations involving Scheffler.
However, supporting Kim is a wise choice in this situation. In addition to his outstanding performance at the Travelers Championship, he has a strong track record at Detroit Golf Club, achieving a seventh-place finish in this tournament in 2022.
Apart from Kim, Young and Pendrith catch my attention as possible winners. If you’re seeking someone with lower chances but still with potential to compete for the win, Moore or Fowler are worth considering.
Although Fowler may not be in the same form as he was when he entered last year’s Rocket Mortgage Classic, it would be unwise to underestimate him in this tournament.
Alex Noren to finish in the top 20 (+160)
Noren has two missed cuts in his last three tournaments (RBC Canadian Open and U.S. Open). But in addition to some solid finishes in notable events (tied for 12th at the PGA Championship, tied for 19th at the Players Championship, tied for 22nd at the Memorial), Noren has several strong finishes in tournaments like this one.
He finished tied for ninth at the Cognizant Classic, tied for 11th at the Texas Children’s Houston Open, tied for 14th at the Valero Texas Open, and third at the Byron Nelson.
Furthermore, it is worth noting that he achieved commendable results in his previous two participations in the Rocket Mortgage Classic. He secured a joint ninth-place finish in the previous year and a joint fourth-place finish in 2021. Without a doubt, this makes him one of my top recommendations for the upcoming week.
Taylor Pendrith to finish in the top 20 (+175)
With his outstanding performance in the Rocket Mortgage Classic and recent achievements on the PGA Tour, this opportunity holds remarkable worth. Once again, I highly recommend taking immediate action and selecting him as a top choice for this week’s tournament.
Taylor Moore to finish in the top 20 (+260)
While Moore’s recent performance might not be impressive, I deeply appreciate the value offered here due to his previous achievements at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Previous success and familiarity can prove highly beneficial in overcoming a slump, making this situation quite promising.
