Storm vs Mercury Prediction & Picks (6/16): Seattle Eyes Ninth Win in Ten Games

With the exception of a discouraging defeat in Minnesota, the Seattle Storm have been in exceptional form in recent weeks. Today, they aim to secure their ninth victory in the last ten games when they pay a visit to the Phoenix Mercury (3:00 pm ET, ABC).

After having their impressive six-game win streak ended by the Minnesota Lynx last Sunday, the Storm (9-4) bounced back with remarkable victories against the Los Angeles Sparks and Dallas Wings, scoring above the 90-point mark in both games.

After a promising start, with a 16-point lead at the end of the first quarter, the Mercury (6-6) failed to seize the opportunity in their recent match against the Las Vegas Aces. The two-time defending WNBA champions dominated the second quarter, outscoring the Mercury 42-23. Despite their efforts in the second half, the Mercury fell just short, resulting in a 103-99 victory for the Aces.

Will today’s rematch at the Footprint Center between Seattle and Phoenix result in a similar outcome as their meeting at Climate Pledge Arena twelve days ago, where the Storm secured an 80-62 victory after taking an early double-digit lead?

Seattle Storm vs Phoenix Mercury Betting Analysis

Up to this point in the season, Phoenix’s performance against the top teams in the WNBA has been a bit inconsistent. They managed to secure a victory against the Aces at Michelob Ultra Arena and gave them tough competition in their other two encounters. Additionally, they defeated the Lynx when playing at home and had a close match against the Liberty at the Barclays Center.

In addition to their defeat by 18 points in Seattle, they also suffered a 23-point loss at Connecticut, scoring a season-low of 47 points. Furthermore, they faced a 24-point loss at Minnesota.

What kind of performance should we expect from Phoenix today? Their home record stands at 4-2, while they have struggled on the road with a 2-5 record. Notably, their worst home result was a 107-92 defeat against the Dallas Wings on May 25, where Arike Ogunbowale’s incredible 40-point performance, including seven three-pointers, helped Dallas secure the victory.

Can we expect another impressive display from Phoenix when they play at home? However, will this be sufficient for the Mercury to reach a .500 record again?

Phoenix is expected to perform better offensively in their first matchup against Seattle, as they struggled last time, shooting only 4 of 23 (17.4%) from three-point range and 33.8% from the field overall.

The Mercury have been consistently scoring 88.3 points per game at home, never dropping below 81 points in any game. Since Brittney Griner’s return from injury, they have scored 81, 97, and 99 points respectively.

However, their defensive performance leaves much to be desired, as they have allowed their opponents to score 80 or more points in 11 out of 13 games, including five out of six games played at home.

This afternoon, it will become evident that their downfall lies ahead. As mentioned in previous articles on Seattle, the Storm have consistently thrived when reaching 80 points in regulation. Their recent victory against Dallas with a score of 92-84 further solidified their perfect record of 7-0 when scoring 80+ points in regulation. Additionally, they have an impressive 6-1 ATS record in these seven games.
