U.S. Open Final Round Predictions & Picks: Will DeChambeau Hold Off McIlroy & Cantlay at Pinehurst?

Although the final round of the 2024 U.S. Open has started, there is still a little while before the leaders begin their quest for the championship at Pinehurst.

Who will emerge as the champion, holding the winner’s trophy once the dust settles later today?

Currently, Bryson DeChambeau, the reigning champion of the 2020 U.S. Open, is poised to join the ranks of golfers who have won the tournament on more than one occasion.

Four years ago at Winged Foot, DeChambeau secured a six-stroke victory by shooting a final-round score of 67. Despite starting the day two shots behind the 54-hole leader Matthew Wolff, DeChambeau outperformed his competitors in the final 18 holes. While Wolff and others struggled, DeChambeau managed to deliver an impressive under-par performance, ultimately winning with a comfortable lead.

DeChambeau was in pursuit as the hunter during that event, but now he will be endeavoring to protect a lead on this occasion.

Following his third consecutive under-par round, with a remarkable score of 67 on Saturday, DeChambeau heads into the final round at an impressive 7-under. In close pursuit are Rory McIlroy, Patrick Cantlay, and Matthieu Pavon, all tied at -4. Completing the top five are Ludvig Aberg and Hideki Matsuyama, both positioned at -2.

Tony Finau, Tyrrell Hatton, Corey Conners, Tom Kim, and Collin Morikawa are the only other players who have achieved a score of one under par, even par, or better.

Will DeChambeau be able to capitalize on that advantage? Although a three-shot lead provides a reasonable margin, the course of events can quickly change, even with just one hole.

Predictions & Picks for the Final Round of the U.S. Open

Who will win the 2024 U.S. Open?

DeChambeau is currently in the lead going into the final round, and he has successfully converted a 54-hole lead into a victory in both of the previous majors.

Scheffler, with a score of 7-under, maintained a one-stroke advantage over Morikawa, who scored 6-under, as they approached the final round of the Masters. On the ultimate day, Scheffler played outstandingly, shooting a remarkable 4-under 68, resulting in a four-stroke victory over Aberg.

At the PGA Championship, Schauffele and Morikawa, who were both at 15-under, held a one-shot lead over Sahith Theegala at 14-under, and a two-shot lead over DeChambeau, Viktor Hovland, and Shane Lowry, all at 13-under, after completing 54 holes. During the final round at Valhalla, Schauffele showcased his skills by shooting an impressive 6-under 65. This outstanding performance allowed him to narrowly surpass DeChambeau by a single stroke, resulting in Schauffele claiming his first major title.

DeChambeau has put himself in an excellent position heading into the final 18 holes. However, McIlroy has done well to stay close enough to potentially make a strong move. Despite McIlroy’s past struggles in major tournaments, my intuition is strongly leaning towards him.

Collin Morikawa will finish in the top 5 (+250)

Morikawa has been in exceptional form for the past two months, beginning with the Masters in April.

He achieved a tied third-place finish at Augusta and a tied fourth-place finish at the PGA Championship. In addition, he has secured three other top-ten finishes, including a runner-up position at the Memorial last week.

His chances of contending at Pinehurst were negatively impacted by a 4-over 74 on Friday. However, he made a strong comeback by shooting a bogey-free 4-under 66 yesterday. Although it will be challenging for him to be in the running for the win today, I anticipate a strong finish and his third consecutive top five placement in a major. Don’t hesitate to take advantage of this amazing opportunity.
