Mystics vs Dream Prediction & Picks (6/11): A Baker’s Dozen for Washington?

The Washington Mystics have started the 2024 WNBA season with a disappointing 0-12 record, despite their hard-fought efforts. Tonight, they will face the Atlanta Dream, led by Rhyne Howard, in hopes of finally securing a victory. The game is scheduled for 7:00 pm ET and will be broadcasted on MNMT.

For the third time this season, the Mystics faced off against the New York Liberty at Barclays Center on Sunday. Despite holding a lead in the fourth quarter, the Mystics were once again unable to secure a victory, falling short against the Liberty.

Washington had a five-point lead with less than nine minutes left in the game until New York made a comeback. Despite trailing, the Mystics had an opportunity to force overtime. However, Jade Melbourne, who had her best performance in the WNBA so far, missed a game-tying three-pointer in the closing seconds, resulting in a 93-88 loss.

The Mystics had another bittersweet performance, showing promise but also enduring agony, as they suffered their sixth loss by a margin of six or fewer points.

Can they replicate their previous performance tonight against Atlanta? When the teams faced each other in D.C. on May 29, they engaged in a tight, low-scoring game with the Dream emerging victorious with a score of 73-67.

Washington Mystics vs Atlanta Dream Betting Analysis

Despite the frustration of repeatedly putting in effort without any tangible results, the Mystics still have some more losses to go before setting a record.

The 2008 Atlanta Dream holds the current record for the most losses at the start of a WNBA season. They endured 17 consecutive defeats before finally securing their first victory against the Chicago Sky, marking a significant milestone for the franchise.

Similar to the current Mystics team, the inaugural Dream team also faced numerous setbacks before eventually achieving victory at home against the Sky.

As fate would have it, the Mystics are scheduled to face Chicago next in their upcoming game at the Entertainment and Sports Arena on Friday (7:30 pm ET, ION).

When Angel Reese and the Sky arrive in town, will they continue their search for a win?

The Dream’s home record stands at 2-3, contrasting with their impressive 3-1 record on the road. It is important to consider the context, though. One of their victories at home was against the Las Vegas Aces, while their three losses at home were against the Minnesota Lynx, Connecticut Sun, and New York Liberty. These three teams possess the best records in the league and have a combined record of 29-6.

Nevertheless, the Mystics have received significant updates regarding their injured players. Center Shakira Austin, who has been absent from the team’s past four games due to a hip injury, is now classified as questionable. However, the most noteworthy development is that guard Brittney Sykes, who has been sidelined for the previous ten games due to an ankle injury, is now listed as probable.

Washington is not going to magically become one of the WNBA’s top teams just because they have a full squad now. However, the dedication they have shown while being understaffed makes the return of two of their top players very promising for their future success.

Am I expecting tonight to be a night of celebration and relief for the Mystics? No, that is more likely to happen on Friday. However, they will undoubtedly make the Dream work hard and Atlanta will need to give their all for the entire 40 minutes to secure their sixth win of the season.

Mystics vs Dream Picks

Washington Mystics team total over 75.5 points (-115 at Bovada)

With Austin and Sykes returning to the court, I believe the Mystics will continue their offensive prowess, following their impressive performances of scoring 83 and 88 points in their previous matches against the Fever and Liberty.
